Washing your cars when it's 10 degrees out
This may be as dumb a questions as can be posted but none the less. How do you guys wash your cars when it is so cold out? In the past I would take my Boxster S to this car wash that has a conventional track in it, but inside our people with soft cloths washing the car. This worked great for me for 3 years and I never ever had a problem. However with the 997S I think the tires are too wide for a conventional car wash track and don't want to scrape up my rims. So just looking to see how you guys handle this.

I just take it to the local Self Serve car wash and spray all the crap off of it and then drive back to my home. The next morning the ice is all melted and I wash the windows. The rest of the car looks fine for the winter.

Every so often bring the car to the dealer and the detailer does the car on his lunch hour, hes a great guy. Also I am looking into putting a wash bay in one of the garage bays this year, if it does happen it will be so sweet.

Try one of those high pressure self serve bays...
Otherwise, find a good hand wash place. In Chicago and 'burbs, there are many...

Just the thought of putting a Carrera S through an automated car wash makes me shudder. Not me, ever. Friends, neighbors, family all ask me why I do all the work possible on my cars. I tell them all the same thing... "my car is like my woman, it is mandatory that I do all my own work." Call the OB/GYN, or mechanic, for the serious stuff only.
Save the Carrera S, winter a Cayenne S and leave it dirty until spring.

Why not find and underground parking garage somewhere that has a hose and that is heated? You may have to pay someone(security guy or whoever) for access. A lot of garages have guys in there that do washings too. You may have to do a little searching around.

Well its not exactly a automatic car wash. There is no equipment inside of this car wash. The only thing they have that resembles a car wash is the conveyer belt. Other then that it is all people inside I can tell you for three years they did a great job on my Boxster.

I do a variation on what the other guys do--I high pressure wash the car, careful not to directly spray into the rear spoiler area--this will blast off the large particles. I drive home and park in my garage--turn the space heater on--and finish with the wash mitt/bucket. I have to rinse with the bucket too...it's a pain, but it sure beats being outside in the 10 degree air.

Not much warmer here in MD, but here's a suggestion. A company named Woodford Hydrants (I can get you one, but this is not a sales pitch) make a hydrant (where you hook up your hose) that mixes hot and cold water into one outlet, just like any faucet in your house. If you can get to a hot water pipe and get a plumber to replace your existing hydrant, then you can wash your car in the driveway with hot water (still cold outside but your hands and the water don't freeze on contact). Finish washing, back it into garage, turn on Space heater and hand dry it.

I live in NYC and have a house in the Hamptons where I can wash my car myself which I almost always do now after the local car wash ran my 996 cabriolet into the back of an SUV and did $2,500 worth of damage. (NOT the '02 cab I have now, by the way, that will shortly be for sale; but a '99 cab that I had previously.) I had my plumber install something called a frost free bibb which enables me to keep my outside water on during the winter. I don't wash the car when it's 10 degrees out, but on a sunny day in the 30's I'll take out a pail of hot water from the house and wash the car.

I don't wash it when it's below 32F. Our next house is going to have a heated garage with an in-door faucet. I can always get a hand wash job at the local car detailing shop.
