Porsche reportedly has a version of Audi's DSG transmission in development. No date for launch, but press have speculated Frankfurt Autoshow along with the C4/C4S and C7S

One magazine reported a rumor of the Boxster coupe being the first to get it. Another reported a Porsche insider saying that the Porsche DSG will function somewhat differently. They explained it in scant detail but I forget the specifics. In any event I recall their goal as being noteworthy, an improvement over the current offerings, that is if you like automatic clutches to begin with. Paul, do you have SMG on your M3. If so how do you like it?

If you like BMW's (and I do also) you may want to see what the new (2006) M3 develops into. I was told it will basically have the M5 (500+ HP) 10 cyl engine with two cylinders knocked off and produce 400+ HP... My wife is waiting to see what comes out before moving on..

A few months ago there was a little blurb in one of the SAE magazines that Porsche would be sourcing an "SMG type tranny" from japanese manufacturer Asahi(?), the same guys that make transmissions for the Cayenne.

Gary,

I am currently first on the list at the local dealer for the first M5 that they receive. I am a big BMW fan, and will probably continue. I will probably look at a 997 someday, but the closest dealer is 325 miles from my home, so this may be an issue ? ? ? anyway, I will probably drive the M5 for a while and then get the new M3 when it comes in a few years.

Is 300+ miles to the dealer something I need to be really concerned with??

thanks for the input.

Well, no... Distance to the dealer isn't something I would put into the equation.... its all bout the car!

I thought that Porsche already makes the gearbox you describe for the 2005 European Cup car, with the same gearbox to come to the USA in the 2006 Cup cars. I think it's made by a company in Australia, the same company that makes some of the products sold by Paul Guard, or so I've been told.

the SMG will debut on the 997TT

it will be a dual clutch system as found on the modern audis/VWs. even smoother than SMG.
