yeah, its VERY hard to pass up the C6 vette.

I'm still holding out on my 997 purchase.

Surprisingly, I've had 2 test drives in a 997S, but no chevy dealers haveany C6 available to even look at.

I just took delivery of a C6 two weeks ago. For reference, I currently also own two Porsche vehicles - a '97 993 and a moderately modified '92 C2 Turbo. In the past I've owned two other Corvettes - an '89 and a '90 ZR-1.

The C6 is a fabulous car - it looks good, it sounds good, and it accelerates and handles great. In straight-line acceleration, it will blow away the 993 and possibly even edge out my turbo. I love my Porsches, too, but there's no denying that the C6 is formidable competition for the 997. I was considering a 997S and I would most likely have gotten one if the C6 hadn't come out.

Funny...they're all in denial and can't fathom why their new world class sports car designed by "excellent" GM engineers can't hold a candle to the 911 in many respects. Not that I don't think the new C6 is a big step up for GM, but when you pay $35,000 dollars more for a Porsche you naturally get a more complete, better engineered car. That's what you pay for.

for the cognescenti, the value that counts is in the quality of the driving experience. we like the Porsche version. money is just a transfer function.

What to do... what to do... The new C6 I'd buy is under $45,000. The 997S I want is $85,000 - I can afford to buy the Porsche - if I really wanted, however that is one heck of a difference in $$$. Is it really worth the difference? I honestly don't know...

Some of you imply that price isn't a consideration, If that were really true, I wouldn't settle for either the Corvette or the Porsche, I'd just get a Ferrari 430 or maybe a 360 CS. But alas, price does matter.

Maybe I should get a C6 for me and a Lotus Elise for my wife...

OT.. sorry.. but not a bad combo IMHO. I'd get the mag shocks for the Vette and have the ultimate hwy barnstormer / roadtripper w cargo space. With the Elise reserved for fun in the twisties and track. Don't be surprised if you find yourself wanting to drive the Elise more though Or an Audi S4 Avant and an Elise would be a great combo. Default Agree C2 is Better Value

In addition, you can fit two kids or plenty of stuff in the back seat. Conclusion: it's the Porsche that's the better value.
I agree. I evaluated the C6 vs C2 and came up with the conclusion that the C6 offers "false economy" because it cannot be driven in winter. Also, the Porsche likely will last longer, adding more to the value equation. The Porsche also had better paint, better materials, more customization....

As a single male who wants to own only one car, a C2 can be my work car, ski car, all-season car, whereas with the C6, suddenly I need a garage and SUV or the like, which means a house, then furniture. Essentially, in my opinion, a Vette owner either lives in a warm climate or has the C6 in a "portfolio" of other cars, a house, etc.

C6 is a great car, but the engine-over-rear-wheels charms and build quality should combine to keep the Porsche in the lead as long as these cars are on the road.

That's it! I'm trading in my Rolex (Porsche) for a big gold chain (C6).

Unfortunately for us northerners, winter is sometime between October and May when cold white stuff called SNOW falls out of the sky and sticks to the ground. Who wants to drive a $2000 beater for half the year while the car you really want to drive sits in the garage? By the way, my base 911 which my wife will use as a daily driver is the same price as my E500 4matic wagon, and I'm not about to park the wagon all winter. That's why I bought a 4matic. On to the value thing. My neighbor's $50,000 Vette gets used about 4 months per year. My $70,000 C2 will get used 12 months per year. Paying 40% more for 3 times the fun -- now that's value.

I looked at the C6 too. Then I remembered one of my best friends who has a '88 Factory Wide Body Targa. At 225K miles every nut and bolt is almost as tight as when it came from the factory and it's still a heck of a lot of fun on the track. Anyone drive a 16 year old Corvette lately? That's why you buy the Porsche....... Dollars over time, it's a lot cheaper.

Long term( over decade ) value/ reliabilty ? Who here really thinks a current new 997 buyer will even keep the car once the 998 is out ? My 997 Turbo will be on the dealer's pre-owned sales lot as soon as my 998 ( V8 or whatever) Turbo rolls off the truck !

You might try to put more thought and civility into your responses. I assume you know what winter is, and you know we're talking about value on a relative basis -- not logging onto Rennlist to discuss the $500 beaters that, after all, get you from point A to point B. And personally, I think you're foolish to assume a Civic worth $2,000 is a safe, reliable bet for winter conditions.
