That's not too shabby considering the "predictions" of some who have posted here recently. I seem to recall some saying that there was no way that the 997 S could crack 13 seconds for the 1/4 mile, etc., etc., etc.
For comparison with the 996 GT3, for the January 2004 issue Car and Driver managed a 0-60 MPH time of 4.0s and a 1/4 mile time of 12.3s at 114 MPH. No, the 997 S isn't going to win a drag race with a 996 GT3, but it's closer than some would probably like to think.
For handling the GT3 managed 1.03 gs and the 997 S 0.97 gs. I think that both are on Michelin Pilot Sport 2s, with similar widths, and it would be interesting to see how a 997 S with the sport suspension would fare.
As a 997 S owner I'm obviously biased, but it seems that it does fairly well in the performance area, despite what some have predicted. It doesn't eclipse the GT3, nor was it meant to, but it comes awfully close in many of the standard measures of performance.
Let the screaming begin.

I think its a perfect car for someone like me, occasional track days, taking a client out to lunch and cruising with the wife and kids! What a car!!!

I'd like to believe it, too...but I agree that those numbers appear to be very optimistic.
The quarter mile trap speed is a good indication of power, and the GT3's at 114mph is what lead journalists and owners to speculate the GT3's motor, at 380hp, is underrated; the 425hp Challenge Stradale in the same January C&D comparison had a trap speed of 115mph.
For the heavier 997S to have a trap speed of 112mph, it would have to be even more severly underrated. It's more likely a factory-supplied ringer for magazine testing.

FWIW, this month's (October) Motor Trendnd features a 2003 996 C4S as one of their long-term update cars... they pulled off a 0-60 in 4.6 and 12.9 @108.7... much better than any published numbers from Porsche... maybe AWD helped the launch off the line???

The Car & Driver test is posted on Rennteam.com 997 forum.
Most there think 4.1 second 0-60 MPH time is the result of high rpm launches that most car owners would avoid.

The 40th Ann 996 runs 12.8 with a similar power to weight ratio as the Carrera S, but the Carrera S has more torque. I was expecting the Carrera S to run 12.7.
It would be good if the S can give the C6 vette some lessons. The GT3 won't be able to do the same with the incoming C6 Z06.

those #'s do sound believable.... a broken in 2003 with some mileage will run a lot faster than someting out of the box... we have 1999 C2's running 4.6 to 60 and 13 in the 1/4 (about 25,000 miles)... once these engines break in... look out
Car and driver actually did a long term test of a 99 C2 and it's 0-150 MPH improved by 10 seconds!!! (this is documented) after I believe 40,000 miles
regards,
Pete

That sounds like reporting of the best possible #'s for the 997 S compared to the worst for the GT3. The best I saw of the GT3 was 0-60 in 3.9 and 1/4 at 12.07. I have seen trap speeds of 116 and 118 for the GT3. I also just learned through expirience last night that the GT3 will kill a 390 horsepower 03 mustang cobra

It surprises me that we are having this debate. Porsche numbers are always conservative i.e. not using high-rpm clutch dumping, as DD694 said.
Whereas Car & Driver is know to really push the car to get its times.

C70Pete,
What RPM are you launching the 99 C2 at to hit a 13? Have you actually seen these numbers yourself? Not questioning the numbers... just want to be able to hit a 13 next time out to the track... also the first time out to the track with this car ('01 C2)
