Dealers also used the term in the 80s to differentiate black/black 911 coupes or Targas and 944s with the black centered Fuchs alloys from cars with the silver painted ATS-sourced phone dial or spoked wheels. So the cabs in the 80s could have been triple or quadruple black. In the former case, you wouldn't know which of either the interior , top or wheels WASN'T black !

This statement is from the owners manual supplement for my 911 Turbo S2, from Porsche (the car modified by Andial for homologation):
"This car is referred to as triple black, because of exterior, interior AND headliner colors" (capital letters are mine).
When I get a chance, I will scan the page and post it.

What official definitions are and what real world US car salesmen bastardizations of them are two different things. As one who bought and sold several Porsches in the mid- 80s , I'm just going by my experience looking at many cars at many dealers in several states . In my experience, no one ever asked about the color of the headliner in buying/selling their Porsches.
Practically speaking , if one is currently looking to buy a used Porsche, "triple black" as stated in an ad for 80s car w/o pics prob refers to top and or wheel color on a cab or wheel color on a coupe/Targa. Cars since 1989 964 on probably refers to cab top color.

i believe RSA is correct. I remember in the eighties (911sc) that the cars came with white/ivory perforated headliners and a black headliner was optional.
triple black= black w/black w/black headliner
