Default Oil filter housing removal

Hi all, I have a situation. I started doing an oil change but discovered that the filter housing was stuck. After a couple of hours of pulling on it my filter wrench broke. Now here's where the situation starts. Due to my driveway layout and expecting to be done with the job I had to move the car. I refilled it with oil but the old filter and housing are still on there. Assuming that I can get the thing off do I need to drain all of the oil before taking this thing off or will just the amount of oil that's in the housing be lost?

You are gonna lose a bit of oil, but not a whole lot of oil.

I'm assuming this is a 997.1 rather than a .2 car. The. 2 has the filter on top of the motor and any oil in there will flow down through the drain plug. The .2 also uses a plastic housing that requires a 36 mm socket for which breaking your wrench would be unlikely.

If I am correct about the .1 I also imagine you have the adaptor on yours to use a metal filter, again, since you broke your wrench.

Moving on ...

An oil change is really a dilution. You're draining a bunch of oil, but not all of it. That is especially true in these cars. In this case you left a little extra in the motor since the oil in the filter remained. At some point, get a better wrench and replace the filter. You'll need to add a little oil or you can prefill the filter. No harm, no foul.

You will exactly loose 400ml of oil. I know it precisely because I always fill my housing with filter after an oil change. This is for Mk1-model of course.
Btw, you need the HAZET 2169 tool to be on the safe side when removing the housing, it is torqued with 25Nm

Yep, I had minimal oil loss. Short version: got it off all good now. Thanks all for your replies.

Yes 997.1. It was perplexing. I do all my oil changes and use a torque wrench. The plastic housing was really stuck. Stuck to the point that my first 14 vane 74mm filter wrench sheared at the weld points where the thinner stamped vaned/cupped part connects with the heavier disc where you attach the socket wrench.

with the new wrench I had to wedge a rag in-between the housing and wrench to tighten the tolerances and keep it from slipping around the housing. Had to use a breaker bar with slow constant increasing pressure.

Glad to see you got it off & all was well!!

I am never surprised at how tight some folks tighten a filter/filter-housing.....

Anywhooo....rant over. Glad you're good!

Hey there,

No need to worry too much! If you can get the filter housing off, you won't have to drain all the oil again. Only a small amount of oil from the filter area will come out. Just be ready to catch that little bit with a pan. Once you get the new filter on, you'll be good to go!

Good luck!
