Why Did They Make 997.2 Headers Integral To The Cats?
Hi Everyone.
Happy new year.
Sorry if someone brought this up before...I searched the forums but didn't find any threads.
Was looking at how beautiful my GTS engine is.
What is ugly is the sand cast headers (or should I say manifold) with the factory dents.
What was the rationale about making the headers integral to the catalytic converters?
Definitely makes it very difficult to get nice headers to impossible here in California with this setup.
Anyone fabricate an exhaust bracket to the cats so you can custom fabricate some headers while remaining street legal?
Thank you.

My guess would be it's an emissions related design decision. The closer a catalytic converter is to the engine, the quicker they can heat up in order to work effectively and eliminate emissions.

Almost 90% of vehicles out there since the 90's have always had their primary cats part of the manifolds.
Then come the secondary cats which could be removed or replaced independently. I don't know if the 911 has secondary cats.
