Default Windshield Washer Leak

It appears that I have a leak from the windshield washer tank. I used the windshield washer yesterday for the first time since owning the car at end of May so apparently something went wrong. The leak is emanating from below where the tank sits by the driver's front tire and there are white crystals formed along the edge of the fluid which dissolve upon contact with the fluid. I am not inclined to do my own mechanical work unless it's something simple and this doesn't look to be simple. Or is it? Who has had a similar problem and what did it take to get it fixed?

2009 C2S 192K miles

The only way to know what happened is to look at it. I replaced the level sensor in the tank ... so you can read the instructions on how to get there and loosen it up. It is not a big deal, but like everything, very fiddly, remove the wheel and then get the wheel liner in and out, and scootching your head into the wheel well and looking up. Goofy as always, but not difficult.

Butt.... oh that big butt.... I would check to ensure it is not leaking where the hose connects to the sprayers. For that, just remove the plastic cowling around your battery... then have someone hit the sprayer while you are looking in there. The cavity around your battery and below the windshield has about two drains on each side of the battery that dump down on the ground. BTW, you should check that these are clear... just ram your finger down in there... probably all gunky from rotting leaves and such.

Peace

Buy a washer pump and the rubber grommet for it before going in. In 11 years of working on these cars professionally, those are the cause of a leak from the tank area 99.9% of the time.

I agree with the pump leaking as that was the problem in my car. Not a serious problem but a pain to do it yourself

Good advice. I finally bought the pump after the second try to R&R the leak.

Someone said you can get the exact same pump from AUDI? for much less.

The Porsche pump is made by URO, and used on a lot of cars. You can pick it up at any auto store for <$30. But after opening my pump up I think most can be fixed in 2 minutes just by cleaning the corrosion and junk that gets on the seal. Pull it apart, wire brush and corrosion off the motor and clean the small rubber seal and housing of gunk and you are likely good to go.

that’s exactly what happened to me. Pump fail and old rubber grommet. The pump was still working condition but leaked badly. Relatively easy replacement. Price around 60$ for OE, about 25$ OEM.
