LED Rear Lights - Fix for Lamp Errors
It seems that DEPO and probably other manufacturers work around the lamp out errors you get with LED retrofits is by adding resistors to the tail light modules. This defeats half the purpose of having LEDs and also dissipates a ton of energy in a small space resulting in the failure of those resistors, to no one's surprise. I believe you can code the rear control module on 997.2 cars for LEDs but it seems you cannot on 997.1. You can code the front module for LED indicators, which is nice. It also looks like you can pay someone several 100s of dollars to either update the firmware on your rear module or modify it in some way for LEDs. Alternatively, you can perform a very simple hardware modification for a few cents and an hour or two.

I found this thread a while ago about replacing the 997.1 bulbs with LED without any mods

Perfectly valid way to do it but you can see in the second product link that they've just got 3x 220 ohm resistors sitting there burning power to avoid lamp out errors. I wanted a way around that and also I'm dealing with the DEPO 997.2 look LED taillights on a 997.1 so I can't just replace lamps. This allowed me to just unplug and remove the resistor boxes on the tailights, of which one had failed anyway, and have no errors.
