Default 987 5-speed Manual Boxster trans same as 996 trans?

So I bought a project 2006 987 Boxster this last year down here real cheap. $600 cheap because it was abandoned and had no transmission. Its a 2.5L and engine spins freely plus my vin decoding said it came with a 5 speed manual originally. I found a 5 speed manual trans locally for a super good deal but have not pulled the trigger because its from a 1998 2.5L 996 car. All my research on ebay and such shows they have the same bell housing and seem pretty much like the same transmission. Some ebay listings show that 996 5 speed manual trans can be used on a 2005 987 boxster and some don't, some show 2005-2005 only.
So questions is Can I install a 1998 996 boxster 5 speed on a 2006 987 5 speed boxster? Physically they look to be the same transmission. Anything that will be different? Will the electric/electronics/connections plugs work? All mounting points seem the same as far as I can tell as well as cables? I dont know much about boxsters, this is my first one, I am 914/944/928 guy( and 911 guy back in the 90s) but I could not leave this pretty decent car to go to the junker and price was right at the time. hopefully someone here can tell me.
Thank you From El Paso.

Best way to know is pull down the Porsche parts katalog for each of the various years and compare the part numbers. If same, you win. Else... well you may be taking a chance.

When the Boxster was released in 1997, the 5-speed was a VW unit. In 2000, the S got the 6-speed same as in the 911. I suspect that 5-speed never changed... but I can't be sure. (I purchased the 2000 Boxster S new at the time.)

I think you mean 987 Boxster and are in the wrong forum. This is the 997 911 forum. You might find an answer in the 996 911 forums. Good luck.
