Default Anyone in Austin have a borescope?

If not, any suggestions on what type to buy? I’m mostly concerned about clear images and making sure that the camera doesn’t get hung up or lose any parts in the cylinder. I’d be going in from the spark plug side.

I bought a new to me 911 two weeks ago and am planning on doing the ims solution. I was thinking I should scope it before spending any extra money on it because an IMS would be included in the price of a rebuild (no need to spend an extra 3k+!).

I have this one which easily fits a spark plug hole. It works fine with an Iphone or Ipad or smart phone. Your phone device needs to have a cellular connection while you connect the camera to it using the Wireless LAN connection.

Amazon Amazon
Wireless Endoscope, NIDAGE 5.5mm 2MP WiFi Borescope 1080P HD Semi-Rigid Snake Camera for iPhone Android, Tablet, Motor Engine Sewer Pipe Vehicle Inspection Camera(11.5FT)

People going to tell you you need to borescope up through the oil sump pan/plate to see the bottoms of the cylinders. That's where the scoring starts first and will be the worst. I did mine through the spark plugs and called it good enough for now.

Thanks for the reply. Looks like its mostly a forward facing camera did it allow you to see cylinder walls clearly?

The camera comes with a screw-on 45* mirror attachment that lets you see sideways. The image isn't great but it's good enough to see if there is scratches.

You can see the scores if they are there, using a straight on camera.

Spessx, are you planning on scoping through the sump or through the spark plug holes?

Gotta do it from the sump.. I’d first cut a filter and if it sparkles then scope it

I was gonna scope through the plug holes (I know sump is better but I just changed the oil and a few of the cylinders are impossible to reach via the sump).

I decided against doing it this weekend. My son and I have been working on the Boxster and we received a defective strut mount that it looks like we’re going to have to cut out of the car. Still figuring that one out.

Also, the 911’s alternator died so thats the next project. The alternator should be here Wednesday.

I agree it should be from the sump. But I don’t think a non-sparkly filter means you’re in the clear. Might mean your engine isn’t chewing on something yet, but doesn’t suggest you’re free and clear of bore scoring.

98% of scoring starts from the bottom end of the walls. It would be easier for a plug hole. Pulling that oil pan takes about as long as an oil change..

as for the filter, it’ll show sparkles… but if your going to drop the pan I’d agree, what’s the point of cracking open a filter…

Yeah, it starts at the bottom. You can see most of the bore from the plug holes, but not the very bottom unless you go from the sump. From the plugs you can at least know that you don’t have A LOT of scoring but can’t rule out that it’s starting. It’s not impossible from the sump to get those forward most cylinders (I think it’s the forward most ones, there are 2 that are a little more trying to get to) just takes some patience.

Thank you for the offer - that’s really nice of you. Bore scoping the car got reprioritized on my to-do list. Honestly, the car isn’t showing any symptoms it’s more of a curiosity for me. I have the car scheduled at TPWS for an IMS Solution, RMS and new clutch in a few weeks which is about $5.5k. I was thinking of borescoping ahead of that work and if the car has any signs of scoring just putting the money towards a Slakker/Hartech 4.1L. Instead, I’m just going to go through with the TPWS service and get all of the service up to date and enjoy the car. If there’s ever a rebuild in my future I’ll be excited to go with the 4.1L.

I’m not a member of PCA. Are there any type of regular 997 meets here locally in Austin? Would love to meet some of the locals.

Yeah, I’m a member. They are fairly active. They have “Lunch Bunch” meetings, a monthly tech session, Sips and Sticks, they meet up at GT International a few times a year, I think there are 3 or 4 track events at COTA this year, a few driving tours. Lots to do. They have a Discord with an Events tabs that’s updated several times a week.

If you can wait, I have one available to me, but my brother has it and he is in the middle of moving.
