I've got to agree with your observations.
I am ready, willing and more than able to buy a new 997 to replace my 996.
Unless this interior looks a _whole_ lot better in person, I don't see how I can.
The console is the worst, followed by the door panels. The 996 panels echoed the rounded lines of the car body. The new body is more rounded, but the console and door panels are squared off.
As for the steering wheel , even my mini wheel has the controls on the _back_ side.

Three Wheelin'
997 interior vs 993 interior
From someone that actually had a drivers license when the original 911s were new, I would offer an alternate critique.
Given that the 997 takes many of its exterior styling points from the 993, it would seem logical that it would do the same for the interior. Here is a comparision view of the 993 & 997 interiors. Notice how the 993 has many slab sided components. Compare the 993 dashpad, glovebox area, vents, and the shift **** & boot, even to some extent the instrument cluster to the 997, they all very similar. The 997 door panels also have a similar look to the 993 and "K" model and later 911s. I would guess that all interior plastic surfaces in the 997 will be covered in the "soft touch" coating or in leather as is the situation with the 996, and no doubt there will be overpriced CF, wood, and paint to match options for the various bits and pieces. The 997 switchgear also takes its cues from the 911 flat wide rocker and toggle switches of the period. The 997 center A/V HVAC components are obviously shared parts with other vehicles, but I think that the designers did a good job integrating them into this 993 retro theme.
All in all, I give this design an A for combining classic styling elements with modern components.

Is Porsche so desperate to bring the "I''ll never buy a water pumper" crowd back to the showroom that they think a 90's interior is the ticket ?
Is the new corporate motto: " Porsche...back to the future" ?
Can't wait for the 998, I guess the little side window vents will be back by then.

wow, I had forgotten what my 993 looked like, it's been a while. I remember feeling the 996 was a little cheesy inside when it came out, but I've been looking at this view in 996 version for 3+ years now (Boxster S and now Targa) and its not bad.
The 997 interior hits me wrong. I especially don't like the steering wheel and the gearshift, and the center counsel is awful busy.
I have always admired Porsche's relative simplicity and clean look (though I like richer finishes than we get). My first instinct is that the 997 interior is lacking to my taste, but I guess I have to see it in person to really decide.

Hey G.R., if you don't like it don't buy it. Personally, I like it and have already put a down payment to spec as I wish an S edition. That is why Porsche makes many versions so we all get to choose what we want.

To me, this interior is fine (not great and not terrible), however, if they have fixed the one huge problem with the 996's interior then I wil be thrilled: Rattles and Squeaks! If it's quiet and stays quiet then it is a masterpiece!

GrantG,
My 996 interior has absolutely ZERO rattles or squeaks. As with anything, there is good and bad in what you buy. I think I'll hold on to the superior 996 instead of backstepping to a 997...

Who cares what the interior and the body look like....porsche doesn't even have enough care for it's customers to fix RMS....they won't be getting my money...
