Default Rear view / Backup Camera Mounting Options

There are many threads on various rear view cameras, most of which focus on the integration of the camera into the PCM system and cable routing. There is not as much information specific to which camera is used and how it was mounted to the car.
  • The most obvious option seems to be a flush mount design with a threaded fastener - this is probably the cleanest but requires drilling into the bumper just above where the license plate is mounted.
  • The least invasive option seems to be a unit that mounts onto a bracket which can be attached to the car on top of or behind the license plate, secured by the license plate screws.
  • I've seen some mention of a camera that is built into a replacement license plate light which would be slick if the quality is good. Example image is below.
I'm inclined to drill the bumper but if there is a good option that allows me to avoid that I'd prefer it. Suggestions welcomed.

Does anyone have experience using a license plate light replacement with a built in camera

I am going to drill the underside and use this one.

Was pleasantly surprised when I got the below camera and the body was metal.

Not exactly helpful, and I know many have done it, but I find the idea of adding a backup camera so odd. Is it really that difficult to back up a 911? Don’t mirrors offer enough of a view?
Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

In the land of SUVs and Pick-em Up Trucks they are helpful for getting out between two land yachts.

Especially when so many people are speeding through parking lots with music jamming and phone in hand.

Also gives extra confidence when quickly parallel parking into tight spots downtown.

some people may like the added security of the camera - kids/dogs/bikes/toys at the house or in the garage...

it is super helpful.

some of us are running rear wings that obstruct our rear view as well.

once you get used to having it, you wont want to go back.

A front parking camera is super helpful as well, esp. considering how low these cars are.

Thank you for the input! What integration module are you going to use?

@4Driver4 I am adding for a couple of reasons:

1) It is helpful to have for safety / backing up and I part my car on top of a drive over lift...this will make lining up easier.

2) I'm installing a carplay integration module so I'm already in it this deep...

this one is as subtle as it gets.

id recommend one of the centre (drilled) cameras, not the license plate light ones - it looks way more factory, almost invisible as it belongs on the car.

I will take photos of mine when i get it done.

Another reason for a backup camera is at night. The backup lights on almost every car are either inadequate or don't give sufficient coverage if you are backing up and turning at the same time.
