Default 997 Convertible Top problems

Hello group... I have a 2006 Carrera S. The top is not working properly. When going down it just flops down ... going up it sticks a little on the passenger side and i have to guide it in.
1) - any suggestions on what could be wrong?
2) - any suggestions on a place in the chicagoland area to have to looked at?

Thx

I know there is a highly recommended shop in Libertyville called The Werk Shop. I've never been but I guy I know uses them religiously and is happy with their work. My personal mechanic is at Advanced Auto Clinic in Wilmette right off the Edens, across from Old Orchard. You could try giving Sam a call and see if he has worked on these before.

Any update on this repair? My cab is doing the same thing. When lowering it the top folds down, but won't stop halfway if i ease off the switch, it just keeps folding up and falling into place. Then the clamshell doesn't want to close. It takes more than several tries to get the clamshell to close fully. Anyone with advice? It would be much appreciated.

Sounds like it is low on hydraulic fluid. Can you check the reservoir level?

I didn't know there was one!!!! LOL!!!! I know a lot about these cars, but that's new! Before I go digging around back there anyone what to offer up where the reservoir is? I haven't seen any fluid on the garage floor and had to have the passenger side ram worked on years ago when it leaked or failed or both.

If it’s low it leaking somewhere, there isn’t much fluid in the reservoir, maybe a little over a pint.

Is there a reservoir on each side or is it central? Im going to have to find a parts diagram.

There’s a central reservoir you can get to behind the rear seats, once you put the top partially up, release the cables and lift the back window, and remove the carpet where the top stows. This is what my ‘06 reservoir looks like. I don’t have a good pic of the location, sorry.

This is a great guide. What you actually have, parts-wise, may vary a bit, (even in the 997.1’s some of the parts on the convertible system are slightly different from year to year), but this guid is solid:

If you find you have a leaking cylinder and are up for replacing them yourself, I recently had a great experience with Cabriolet Hydraulics. I shipped my cylinders to them for a rebuild and had them back, better than new, within a week:

Thanks for the reference materials. I've read it all and will dig into the top shortly. Based on what I've read whatevers wrong should be pretty obvious and straight forward to repair. I hope! LOL!!!

+1 on sburke's comments. I had the same problem as you on my 06. Removed the cylinders and sent to Cabriolet Hydraulics following their instructions on website. Reinstalled when returned a week late and top works perfect. I never saw any evidence of leaking cylinders, but apparently they were.

I don't have any visible leaks on the rams or any of the hoses, but my fluid does appear to be low. I have ordered fluid and will add it when it arrives. Let's see if this cures the problems.

Default Convertible Top Hydraulics / Rams

My 996.. same problem! Minor leaking LH Hydraulic. Ended up finding a service through Ebay! 1 year warranty under $300 with volume discount (2 or more).. Yes!... for both hydraulics! Received them back in working order and all cleaned up!!! They look new!!!
