Engine noise 997S 2005, 71000 km
Hi to all.
Maybe another ticking engine noise thread.
Since last week, we noticed a metallic ticking noise near the water pump belt.
Some history:
We have the car since year and a have, adding 3000 km on it. Today total is about 71000 km.
Automatic transmission.
When buying the car, I did some computer check and noticed some over revs that I ignored due to Aut Trans….it can not be that bad.
Oil change when purchased, I opened the filter and found very small debris inside.
Runs smooth.
Aftermarket Borla exhaust.
Left side exhaust pipe a bit darker than right side.
When purchased I noticed cooling liquid was not original, so a change to Porsche original was performed. Maybe 90% of old one was removed.
When noticed the ticking:
- Took the belt away. Start a few seconds and the noise is still there.
- Opened the oil cap and still there (not sure why I did this)
- Oil level checked. It was half way so we added a liter, leaving it full.

After 20 min driving, same noise when cold came back,
At idle is louder. About 1500 rpm, noise reduces. Above 2000 rpm it looks there is no noise. Hard to know exactly due to the Borla system.
We did a lot of reading, looked at many videos etc. From loosen exhaust, to potential lifter failure and/or bore scoring.
We have not gone into deep yet, but hope it will not be a too long and expensive journey.
Any ideas?

Not sure if you're referring to a rhythmic ticking or erratic?
I hear an erratic noise in the 1st video (cold start).
In case that is what you are referring to:
With the engine turned off, I always suggest some mild taps with a rubber mallet on different areas of the exhaust to eliminate the chance of rattles coming from the exhaust, connections, or heat shields.

Definitely not an expert here as I have never heard the piston slap sound in person. The symptoms of the sooty pipes suggest bore scoring and a rhythmic noise could be piston slap.
However, the frequency of the rhythmic noise seems higher than the recordings I’ve listened to of engines w/ bore scoring. Could be that you have more than one piston slapping. Could also be something else. The rattling seems like it is coming from another source. Could be two unrelated issues.
I would suggest getting the cylinder bores scoped (even through the spark plug holes if you can’t find someone who knows how to do it from the bottom of the engine). At a minimum that should give you a good indication if that is the problem area or it is something else.
I really hope that the noise is caused by something else that is loose and easily fixed. Best of luck and keep us informed about what you find.

It would be impossible to properly diagnose the issue from here. I would suggest you take the car into a good indy or Porsche dealer you trust. Some of the symptoms you list are part of the list for bore score (clicking aka piston slap, sooty tail pipes and darker on one side) But it could also be something loose. You just need to get into a shop.

By the way, oil level halfway is just where you want it. If you added a liter, the engine is overfilled now which is not good. Best of luck otherwise!

i will check for loosen or broken parts first (best and cheap choice).
it is a busy week so it will be difficult to have the car checked by a mechanic before the weekend.

Sounds like a heat shield or clamp that is loose. When the engine is cold you could try hitting flat surfaces (exhaust muffler, header, etc) with the palm of your hand to see if it's just something loose.

Hi to all. An update:
As soon as the rpm’s are increased above 1300, noise disappears.
Visit to the mechanic. It is something loose in the exhaust system. With a rubber hammer it changes/disappear. I should have checked myself before :-((.
So, it is the best outcome so far.
i will check if an IMS change could be performed…while being there.

Hi. Problem fixed!.
Broken catalytics were the source of ticking noise.
We changed the broken ones for two new high flow units. They were adapted and worked fine. Maybe I will change them for a complete high performance exhaust system in the future, but need to have the car back in the street.
Much louder now of course, but sounds nice.
