Default Steering wheel removal help

I’ve removed the steering wheel a few times with no issues, but today when I pushed an Allen key into the hole at the bottom of the wheel to release the airbag, the little steel clip inside the wheel which releases the airbag popped off when pressure was applied to it. I can rattle it around inside the wheel. So, without the clip in place I’m at a loss as to how to remove the airbag.

Any ideas?

By looking at the replacement wheel it looks like the only way to get the steering wheel off is to cut the wheel casing near the base of the wheel so as not to damage the airbag. I can’t see any other way to get to the bolt that holds the wheel to the spline

Upcoming weekend project

Find something that has a y-shaped (or u-shaped) end, or grind the end of the long hex key, when push up to release the airbag, you are pushing up this horizontal bar to release the bottom 2 hooks on the airbag.
