Default CEL P3081 Engine Coolant Temp Implausable

09 C4S 6MT. 80k. Car warms up normally, every so often I notice the coolant temp deviate cold from 175F for a few minutes and go back. Oil temps seem normal? Got this code, reset it with a PWIIS 2 and 100 miles and a few days later it's back. Runs perfect otherwise.

Indy shop says it's the thermostat, and wants to replace the water pump too. ($1.2k)

Read a service bulletin about GT3s having a coolant circuit that goes through the transmission, does this car have that?

Anyone have any similar experience? Anything I could check our with the PWIIS?

Thanks!

997.2 water pumps are not like the previous versions. They last a long time. If you were doing it yourself, I would suggest changing the Coolant Temp sensor first, then the thermostat. But if you are paying a shop to do this, then the labor and material getting to the thermostat is about the same as that of replacing the water pump. So, since you have to drain the coolant to change the thermostat and the labor is mostly the same, you might as well do the water pump too.

Okay thanks - code this time is p2181 - thermostat stuck open. So there's no coolant circuit through the manual transmission in a 997.2 carrera S?

Not on a 6-speed. There is a heat exchanger on the PDK.

The 996 GT3 (I have one) is a track car and it can benefit from additional cooling. The 997.2 is not a track car.

Okay - I am leaning towards a failing thermostat. Quoted $750 at the dealership. Anyone here ever have a failed temp sensor? I'm guessing that would look different. I hear that sensor is a pain to change.

Oil temps more or less match the cooler coolant.

No other coolant circuit to check? Sounds like this car doesn't have any other circuits off of the coolant lines. I appreciate the help!

Also have access to a PWIIS if anyone has any ideas how to pinpoint this, before I just take the car in.

Thanks!!

This was a bad thermostat. $750 at dealer. Completely fixed.
