Soon-to-be new Porsche owner (06 997.1 C4S) -- the dealership only has one key for the car, and it's two button without one for the roof, rather than the expected three button... Is this normal? If I get a three button and move the key and transponder will it work?
No, it will not work. US-spec cars have only two buttons and there's nothing on the fob circuit board for a third button for the 'comfort feature' roof. You can't code the car to have this feature, either. The only way to enable is to buy a SmartTOP module, that plugs into the car and adds several highly useful features to open the top and windows. I have it, bought recently and while $400 for a small plastic module hurts, the features are excellent and highly configurable.
I am assuming you have a cabriolet, as you don't mention this in your post.
Insurance and liability is the reason, simple as that. It took me close to a year to spend $400 on what seems to be frivolous (SmartTOP), but since installing it, I cannot stop using it. Being able to use one-touch up and down for the roof, and deciding where the windows end up is a huge time saver and frees you up from using the chintzy window buttons with the dumb front-rear selector....
Is the SmartTop solution pretty stable? I forgot I wanted to buy this some time ago and want to pull the trigger.
Very stable and easy to configure too. It's a nicely put together module. I shopped around looking for a used bargain (well, at $350) and ended up buying new from an ebayer. Not a single issue since installing, 8 weeks and about 5 drives ago. Just gotta suck it up and acknowledge that you are paying for a solution, not so much the cost of the hardware supplied (probably about $30 of hardware, tops). The entire module can also be configured in-car after install using the control stalk. There are multiple features in the module beyond just top operation and the window functions are ideal, for instance, one-touch open BOTH windows on drivers side, etc. You can disable all features this way for valets, etc (haha, the day a valet drives my car.....) I can see why there are zero negative complaints.
