Torn headliner... cut it?

Torn headliner... cut it?
I've been driving 911's for 20 years and I just purchased an 06 997 cab.
I went into it knowing I'll need to replace the roof and headliner, but I can probably get away with not doing the roof until next year. The headliner however is torn off completely at the base of the B-pillars, with two pieces of loose plastic hanging off them, and risks getting jammed in the top mechanism.
So... question... given it is going to be replaced, and is a mess, should I just cut it off and make sure the fabric doesn't run? Has anyone done this?

I do gym upholstery not that it's the most relevant here. If you cut off what you need to a sewing supply store will have some type of adhesive or something to keep the edge clean and folded over. I'm sure a local upholster who sees convertible tops everyday has a cheap get you by until the day comes kind of solution. Fabric can be a pain sometimes.
