Good evening. My rear hatch was working perfectly yesterday until I made a very minor spill retrieving my bag from the back. It was less than a 1/8 cup of tea that was left over, probably not even that much. Now, the rear hatch will not open. I know that the roof has to be closed perfectly for the lever and key fob to work. I have opened and closed the roof on several occasions. Yesterday, I noticed the roof would not close all the way and the screen would not either. Today, it slowly closed and the screen was moving at the regular pace. I am not sure what the issue may be. It was working fine prior to the very minor spill. The microswitch was replaced and control unit were replaced in May of 2019 for the rear hatch by the previous owner by the dealership. The very minor spill was done by the rear hatch but most of it just spilled onto the rear of the vehicle nothing on the interior. It was cleaned immediately. The key fob nor the interior lever will work as of now. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
I've had issues with opening my hatch when the car battery is low. How old is your battery? Do you keep your car on a battery tender when you're not driving it?
Good morning,
I have not checked the fuse. I am a new Porsche owner as I have always purchased BMWs in the past. I purchased the car from a private owner a little over four months ago. I have yet to put on 1,000 ,miles. I currently still own my X5 and sold my 5 series to purchase the Targa. I am very pleased and the previous owner had all of the service records. I did just start it up this morning. The roof is closing a bit faster now but the rear hatch still will not open. I will look in the manual to find the fuse box and check. Thank you.
Good morning,
The battery has been serviced according to the records by the dealer at the 60K inspection. It graded out "good" status. That was done on 2/28/2020. The car currently had 66,690 miles on it. I do not think the batter is the issue. It is just funny that all of a sudden it stopped working within 30 minutes of opening. I placed my bag in the back, closed it gently as usual to let the hatch lock electronically and that was it. I opened up the roof half way as to not push the roof onto the bag. I closed the roof and headed home. I went to open the hatch to get the bag out and it would not open. Literally, 30 minutes transpired????
Good morning,
I did some more research and it looks like the fuse the controls the rear hatch also controls the rear spoiler. The spoiler will open up from the car dash lever. I will check the fuse just in case though.
@tito86 ,are you still having this issue or did you find a solution? I am experiencing the same issue where the hatch will pop open when I use the key or the button in the car, but it almost immediately locks again. Was that your issue too?
Good morning,
Well, my Targa has been in the shop for repair since 4/29. It seems that the whole roof has to be repaired and replaced. At this point, $6000 is the estimate and I have paid for half. The part came in last week and hopefully repair will be done early next week. It has been a night mare for me and the mechanic. I took it to a Porsche specialist here in Maryland. More to come...the pictures have caused me sleepless nights!!! Lol. The seats are out, the top is out, rear hatch, etc. The car looks gutted other than the steering wheel and console!
Oh man....I'm sorry to hear that. I hope that it gets resolved. $6K
I love the Targa because of the gorgeous glass and view of the sky, but these stories scare the crap out of me. I'm even thinking of selling me just because I don't want to be in this kind of situation. My issue is still not resolved. The indy suspects that the issue is with the latch which is a $1400 part. There are a few more things that I want to try like removing the latch mechanism and inspecting it for any worn parts, etc.
Good luck and keep us Targa owners posted. All the best!
Thanks for the thoughts. It has been a challenge to say the least. I will inform all once the repair is done and I have the car back in my garage!

Good evening. The Targa is back after $8400 in repair. It works fine now as far as the sliding glass. There are some small glitches where there is a rattle at the roof now once it is closed on the drivers side. Once I push up on the instrument prior to the glass it stops. Once I take the pressure off, the rattling knows continues. Once the top is open, no noise at all. Other than that, all is well. I am taking it back tomorrow just for a follow up to see if there is anything that can be done. Also, my rear camera no longer is active. It was a custom rear view camera and when the battery was taken out, it has now become not functional. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Omg!!! This is giving me major anxiety. If you wouldn't mind, can you break down the cost in parts and labor? What exactly did they change and what was the cause of your issue?
So, the ticket states that the removal of top was done, rebuilt entire assembly sliding including guide tube assembly and Targa top slider assembly. Tested sliders, realigned all mechanical operation guides and installed new guide lube. Reinstalled top and adjusted operation. As of this weekend, the rear window does not open but, it was working fine since I picked it up last month. I am taking it back in at the end of the month for oil change and to fix the rear hatch!!!
