I recently installed a few different sets of LED license plate lights, so thought I’d give everyone the heads up that 991 OEM units will indeed work without resistors.
I first started with a non-OEM, generic set from Amazon that included resistors for about $20. Overall the light was far too bright, to the point where it would have made people think my reverse lights where on. Cool that the lights were effective, but not in this application!
Second, I ordered a set of 991 OEM units from Pelican. I went with a set from JL that cost $50 for the pair. The part number was 1K8-943-021-C-M352. These units fit perfectly, didn’t require resistors and throw no codes. Even better, the light is the right level to give my car a bit of a modern update.
Hope this helps anyone that may be considering LED festoon bulb add-ins or the cheap LED retrofit versions.
Here’s a picture comparison. Both appear pretty bright (OEM on left), but the OEM units are inline with my 2019 X5 that I park in the next stall.
While looking at the part number page for 1K8-943-021-D-M352, Pelican rates all JL brand products shown on as 1* out of 5*. Maybe not such a big deal on an item such as this but it is somewhat indicative of this company's products... and not in a good way.
