3rd Brake Light - clamshell of Cabriolet - removal
My clamshell 3rd brake light is out in my 997 Cabriolet: auxiliary stop light. The repair manual, but it calls for a special tool: Disassembly tool 9707. This tool cost $164... Rather than doing that, I could just break the brake light and buy a new one for $100. ha.
I want to figure out a way to remove the light without the tool. Has anyone tackled this without the special tool? I haven't found anyone else on the internet/forum who have removed it without the tool and without breaking the light.
Part number for the brake light is: 99763105403.

I used a 1/4 inch drive 9mm socket on a 6 inch extension. This socket fits over the clip and the lip of the socket is used to relieve the snap portion of the clip. Only slight pressure was required from behind the light and it came off easily. The cheapest I could find the Porsche tool was around $160, so this was a welcome relief. DO NOT pry it out from the outside.
