Default Flywheel wearing on 997.1 85k miles

I just had my engine dropped to replace the wiring harness and was told that my flywheel is wearing out as they found metal particles within the housing. Is this typical for 85k miles? When is a typical flywheel replaced? Any information is appreciated.

Mine was not so hot at 65k. I replaced it when I did the clutch at that point to avoid this verry issue. I’m assuming they did the clutch at some point on yours but not the flywheel.

Can I side-bust and ask, what does one expect to feel or hear when the flywheel is needing attention?

It's a dual mass flywheel so in addition to the surface condition, the internal springs and components are subject to wear. If in doubt, replace. If it lets go it could take out your transmission case.

Dual mass has a higher failure rate then solid types. At 85k miles it does not surprise me, I am sure many had this issue. Its common in VAG products at that mileage.

Thanks folks for the helpful feedback. In the near future I've decided to have stock clutch, FW, & engine mounts all replaced together.

Good call. I had a spring fail on my flywheel at 94k miles. Just bought the car at 92k. Literally the clutch would release up to the engagement point then it wouldn’t engage the clutch at all unless I slipped the hell out of it. Now I have new clutch and flywheel and it’s like a whole new car. Regular rule of them from what I read is you should change your flywheel every second clutch change for future reference.
