Default 997.2 PCM Firmware Update Not Possible?

I was just told by my local Porsche service department over the phone that it isn't possible to do a firmware update on my 2010 997.2 PCM.

Is this correct?

It looks like I'm running the original version 1 firmware delivered with the car.

No true. They likely don't want to do it unless you purchase and have them install the navigation map update which includes the firmware update disc.

Many of them don’t like to do it even if you do buy the map license. It’s like 1 hour of book time but takes the PCM hours to apply the update. The laptop HDs in those things are also getting old - dealers have no skills or software to fix them, so if the update hits bad blocks or something on the drive, they get to have the conversation with you about who pays $thousands to try to buy a replacement from Germany or send it to the one guy in NJ who can fix them. You could probably find a dealer who will do it or get PCNA to force them, but it’s probably best to just deal with the version you have or go aftermarket.

I wonder if you changed out that old hard drive with an SSD it would speed this up. That is rhetorical as I’m an IT guy and the SSD drive would have more IOPS.

I recall the drive swap DIY thread a while back from maybe Bruceinphilly? Granted this is a lot of effort to go through.

On the flip side, I’m curious when the PCM replacement with CarPlay will be available like they have now for the 996. Sorry to hijack...
