Default 9A1 engine manual

Hi all,

I recently purchased a 997.2 GTS 6-speed. I'm a shade-tree mechanic and restorer for the most part, with my last (and final) project rebuilding a '70 C3 454 corvette 4-speed - fast but leery dangerous. The market for C3 big blocks went through the roof, so I sold it after 12 years of ownership. The birth of my son (now 2) meant that I needed a 4-seater, and my dream car had always been a 911, so that motivated the sale. I'm hooked on the 911, wow.

I also realized I know so little about flat 6 engines, and want to learn more in this space, so radically different in ways to a LS V8. What would be the recommendation in terms of literature? I'm not really after shop manuals or AIMs but more so of an overview, as I am unsure where to even start, being frankly honest!

Thanks for any pointers.

One of the premiere engine builders is Flat 6 Innovations. They have quite a few video tutorials, he chimes in frequently and even did a few weekend courses on 997 engine building. Product development, everything. Jake Raby is who you want to talk to. Google him, pretty respected guy.

I’m also a new owner of the 9A1 motor. Mine is a PDK though. I need to drop my 3.8 and figure out what’s up with it. Is your GTS a 3.8 as well? I really like the power and torque of this motor!

Yes, the GTS motor is a 3.8 with a few additional HP (408, if I recall), Overall the same engine. I love the sound while driving but never really liked the DI clack sound at idle. Had no idea that my car would sound "John Deere'ish" while waiting for the light to turn green :^),

Love the car and feel fortunate to have one!

Cheers and good luck dropping that motor, from what I hear it is not that tough to do.
