Default HOW TO Secure Inflatable Spare Tire in 997/987/981

I was not comfortable driving around relying on a can of goo for flats. So, here is a HOW TO for the community to have an inflated spare tie system secured in the frunk of their 997/987/981.

1. The 986 came with an inflated spare, aluminum scissor jack and tool kit. These are available on e bay from dismantlers at reasonable prices. I bought two of these 986 systems and secured them in the frunk of my 997.2S 2WD and my 981. If you own a 997.4S, stop reading now. The inflated spare tire from 986 will not fit in the smaller frunk of the AWD cars. AWD cars need the COLLAPSIBLE spare tire which will not be discussed here. Attached are photos of the 3.5J x 17 inflated spare tire purchased through e bay for $100.

Note the correct part number is 986.362.130.01. Also note the tire is in new factory condition with the manufacturing nibs still on the tread. New replacement tires of comparable size are also available at tirerack.com. I also purchased the 986 factory aluminum jack, styrofoam case and tool kit on e bay for about $50.

The styrofoam case allows the jack to fit inside the spare wheel to save frunk space. Now, it is CRITICAL that you secure the spare tire in your frunk to prevent it from flying forward and denting the frunk hood during an emergency stop. So, I used two nylon straps or tie downs with a ratcheting nylon tie down strap from harbor freight. Wrap one nylon strap around wheel spoke and fun down back of wheel and under tire in frunk. Attach ratcheting end of HF tie down. Use another nylon strap (blue) to attach to frunk structural support and attach other end of HF ratcheting tie down. Now ratchet up the slack. It just needs to be tight enough to keep the spare from moving forward.

Here are photos of it in the vehicle.

There is no pressure on the horn or bracket. It is not that tight.

This is in a 997.2S 2WD. Note 1.5 T hydraulic aluminum jack. I now have the jack behind the spare tire and wheel which helps hold it in place.

I have successfully fitted this inflated spare system to the frunk and on the front and rear wheels of a 997S and a 981S. They both have 330 mm rotors with four piston calipers I believe. The spare tire will NOT work on. 991.1S which has larger 340 mm rotors and larger six piston calipers. It bolts up but the spare wheel locks against the top of the 991.1S brake caliper. Have not tried it on a base 991.1 so have no idea if it will work there.

Thanks. I have all those parts in the garage. Looks neater than the toolbox cuttently a wedge in front of the spare.

That is clearly an alternative based on your situation. But DOTS....”depends on the situation” as my drill instructor used to say. For example, I rented a car in Las Vegas. Drove about 3 hours north to Zion National Park. Had flat tire in the middle of nowhere. Spare was flat also. Called rental company. They Said...no problem, will send a tow truck. So guess how long it took for the tow truck to drive 3 hours north, get the car and deliver the car and us back to Las Vegas? It was 14 hours from the time the flat occurred until I got back to the hotel and still never made it to Zion. So again, DOTS.

I do not track my car so saving 50 lbs. is just not a concern for me. If I did track it, however, everything in the frunk would be left in the paddock anyway while on track so still not an issue.

But, I know many agree with you.....if my wife has a flat, she calls AAA too even with a jack and fully inflated spare (and if she cannot reach me to come change it for her).

Haha- I was kidding so don't take it seriously. I live in NJ now, which is over populated, so the chance of not having service to call AAA is low. When I lived in AZ I most definitely had a spare.... and a firearm haha.

No problem. AAA has its place and is a great service. I buy 3 memberships as Christmas presents every year for my wife, mother and sister.

Yeah, and shall I leave the flat 19” OZ Ultraleggera on the side of the road? I was going the “ f it and buy it “ route so I’d have a spare for a West TX or CO trip BUT, the flat tire and wheel I remove cannot fit in the car or the frunk. Instead I carry a t-handle and plugs, and use the Porsche compressor in the frunk. Not $700 either....maybe a roof rack would solve the flat tire and it’s wheel issue, but then I’d just rally style it and carry and extra wheel, and that would have to be one for front width and one for rear!

I would just stick with the T-handle and plugs......out in west TX it’s a long *** wait for a wrecker band even longer for a new tire!

The rear tire on my 981S fits in my passenger seat. Ask me how I know....... That is how this all started.

Really? I tested a 11.5 inch rim with a fully inflated 305/30/19 tire and it fit without too much wrangling.

I have tested it also. I have been using this system for several years. The inflated rear tire and stock wheel on my 997.1, 997.2 and 981 all fit in my respective passenger seat. Tight fit for sure but doable long enough to get me home driving 30 mph so I can address the flat tire in my garage instead of side of road.

Not normally an issue for me, BUT the one tire and wheel will also fit in rear of 911 or on passenger’s lap in 981. That is why there is a large plastic contractor’s bag in the photos. Not ideal for more than 15-20 miles home at 30 mph but every alternative has its downside. I prefer to limp home to my well lit, equipped, warm garage and quick jack instead of lying on my back on back on side of road at night in snow hoping I can find a nail, remove it and the plug holds.......and screwed if it is a sidewall rupture or a tread cut.
