Default Console Repaint + Numeric Shifter & Cables

Yesterday I completed a big project on my '08 C4S. I bought a used center console from Rmag911 (great guy to transact with!) and repainted it using The Bruce's 997 Center Console Respray DIY and all of the other Rennlister's additional input on the thread. It was a big undertaking but the results are beautiful. Since I was going to remove the console for the swap out, I decided that it would be an opportune time to install Numeric's shifter and cables. The shifter was a breeze but installing the cables was akin to wrestling a big, strong alligator. I was working alone with the car up on jackstands (I need Santa to bring me a car lift) so that made the job that much tougher but I did remove the console, install cables and shifter and installed the newly painted console in about 7 hrs. The shifter/cables are awesome!

If anybody is interested, I now have a stock shifter and cables (53K miles) and a center console for sale, I also have some leftover, unused black paint and SEM primer. BTW, the console and all piece-parts came out smoothly with zero broken tabs or damage beyond the 14 years of wear.

Cheers,

Scott

Going to be doing the exact same thing except not sure if I want to put the console back.

Did you cut the carpet? I’m reading that needs to be done to be able to use the shortest setting.

The Numeric shifter is a thing of beauty but unless you are mostly track, I would think that a console is needed.

I used the middle setting so no cutting of carpet. The middle is very notchy and mechanical. I'm not sure that I would enjoy lowest setting.

I don’t mind the exposed/mechanical look at all but would be nice to have the interior look finished. The parts around the hvac controls don’t go down far enough. I’m sure it would be a very limited market but wish there was a way to keep lots of the numeric kit exposed and still look finished.

Congrats OP on the shifter and cables. I'm sure you will love them.

I made a cover out of some generic black automotive carpet to clean up the look. I did have to trim off the lip that's on the lower storage tray though.

did you use anything as backing to support it? I’ve been meaning to wrap those side trim pieces in alcantara. I suppose I could use that instead of automotive carpet since I have it.

Out of curiosity what automotive carpet did you use? That looks like a decent match.

I got the carpet from here: https://www.onlinefabricstore.net/bl...ex-carpet-.htm

I was going to support the carpet. But it's around 3/16in thick and can support itself. I made it slightly oversized compared to the opening so that the carpet is tugged in the surrounding trims. The carpet is also held in place with adhesive velcro pads, so it's not going anywhere. You can certainly make a backing plate out of cardboard or plastic sheets to give a more uniform look. But I really just cared about keeping the mess in front of the shifter out of sight.

Nice, it looks a lot more simple and clean with the extra carpet. Why did you trim the lip? Couldn't you have used the lip to mount the carpet on making it look more flush?

I'm digging the radio-delete too!

The radio delete is great and gives a surprising amount of storage room. The lip sticks out horizontally. It's supposed to support the shifter surround trim. Now without the center console, it's just ugly to look at.

Ah, now I see what you're talking about. Are you going to buy that OEM tray piece just in case you plan to put the ctr console back in?

I already got a used tray for $20 from Ebay. I got it mainly as a backup in case I screw up with the dremel tool. Thankfully nothing went wrong as plastics is pretty forgiving. The funny thing is the used tray I got is actually in better condition than my original one. So I call it a win-win situation.
