Advice Needed: Numeric Shifter Orientation Adjustment
Got my 997 back from my mechanic after having him install my Numeric Shifter and cables. The “home” orientation is definitely canted to the left. I’m bringing it back in today to have it adjusted, on the phone he said there is “some adjustment remaining” which was a slightly concerning statement. Mine was the first install he had done of one of these set ups (my 2008 is one of the newest Porsche’s I’ve seen there) is there any reason why he shouldn’t be able to get the shifter to stock straight up and down for its “home position” if he can’t, does anyone know what that means in regard to a mistake in the install? He did say that the cables were longer than the OEM, he called Numeric to make sure we didn’t get the wrong cables, he was told they only make one length, and that it is longer than stock to accommodate risers for the shifter, could how he dealt with the extra length be at work here? Any help from the brain trust is, as always, sincerely appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have the shifter, but not the cables. The cables do have an adjustment on them to lengthen or shorten the anchor point as does the Porsche cables. This will, in turn, change the angle of the shift leaver. Sorry to say this, but this is obvious and a maladjustment is stupid easy to see. I did my own install and that adjustment can be easily "eyeballed" or, you can use a tiny spirit level to ensure uprightness.
Oh, Porsche sells some sort of plastic jig that you can use to ensure the shifter is to Porsche's desires... but it is so not needed. Just Google "Porsche shift cable alignment tool".

Thanks Bruce,
I am bringing it back in, hoping for the best, just was curious if he thinks he “ran out of adjustment” before it’s straight up and down, what do you think is at that point been done wrong, because obviously, something has. Appreciate the response.

Slightly left? Doesn't that bring the whole shift action closer to the driver?
The action is springloaded in the gearbox to the centre of the 3-4 shift plane.
Makes the 5-6 shift plane an easier reach.
The only issue is if reverse gear cannot be selected before the travel of the mechanism bottoms out on the left edge of the shifter chassis.

I was able to make mine go straight up and down, checked it with a level even... and did the cable install myself. After one drive I canted over to the left to be closer, it feels better that way as BLU997 commented. It is minor, but works.
A work in progress, will keep the group updated. Appreciate all who have chimed in. I’m a bit of a large animal 6’2 250 so I think that might have exaggerated the feeling of closeness, also my borderline OCD may have been nagging at me that it wasn’t “correct”... work in progress...

Got the car back and the shifter is much more straight up and down. Short drive home feels great possibly a little more effort but again, will do a proper drive after “work” hours. My guy who was the wrench for a race team that campaigned a 944 back in the day told me that he could adjust the cables to put the shifter anywhere I wanted, he played with it until the cables were the “happiest”, love this guy. I told him I’d drive it and let him know. Thanks again for all the replies gentlemen.
