what year/model year? im starting to think 2008 as a 2009 model year car. i mean it would make sense to think it will be around for at least 4 years, right?

Speculation is '08 model year. But it is all speculation. 3 model years of 997 expected.

it looks like it will be the typical 6 year cycle. i mean if they are gonna role out the entire 911 line on the 997 platform itlls be around longer than 3 years. i think porsche wants to make more money out the the 997-the updated version of the 996, before they move into all new platform. from a $$ standpont it doesnt make sense to have the 997 for only 3 years, if they can sell it for 6 years and make a ton of $$, they will. I do not think we will see the 998 untill 2009-2010, but i would expect it to be a RADICAL change including somethnig other than a flat6.

When the 998 will be launched i think is already in the company's 5 year planning schedule. Thus it all depends on what is in the pipeline. 993s only ran for 4 years because the 996s were already in teh pipeline eventhought the sell through of the 993s were better than anyone forecasted. so if they have the 998 in teh pipeline the 997 could be just a bridge becasue they know the 996s will not last another 3 years which is the amount of time they need before they are ready w/ the 998 ....so nice way for porsche to spend a little and keep the 911 family looking relatively fresh.
