Build Thread: 2005 Carrera S - Gen V LT1 Swap - Tiptronic to Manual Swap

I have put 15,000 miles on my LT1 motor (C7 Grandsport) and it's a torque monster. Really appreciate it's simplicity in engineering especially in today's world and i'm amazed how much power they are capable of - in fact sending mine up to Ligenfelter for their 600hp package. The build sheet blows my mind and for only 9k...and some Corvette people say that is overpriced - nope that's a bargain to me.

Not a ton to show. I bought a 2016 Escalade engine harness that came with a body harness attached. Went through that to sort out just the necessary engine harness components. It's not a terribly difficult process. Delete anything transmission related (4wd, TCM harness, 4lo...), delete unnecessary wiring to the BCM, be sure to keep what you need depending on your swap, and trace and label your power wires. All in all, I believe I have 23 wires going into the car, that includes starter, AC, pedal, CAN, fuel pump control module, and 12V connections. I am planning to run all of this through the black Engine harness plug.
Other than that, received my material to complete the flywheel assembly. I am going to pick up a rotary table for the mill tomorrow. I tried to trepan a 14" hole in the bell housing plate... Did not work out.
Precision cast plate, always so shiny.
Being the stingy person I am, I already stripped the tape and wire loom off some of the body harness. I keep all the connectors and good wiring. I never have to buy a spool of wire this way, and when I need to extend wires in the car, I can typically match colors.

You know, there is just something cool about a big hunk of billet aluminum... Like I could buy some assorted billet pieces and polish them and hang them on the wall in a random way and call it art.
"Billet" on the plaquard.

I pulled the heads off to check the cylinders for bits. I did find enough puzzle pieces to be confident I had it all out of the engine. I spoke to a highly recommended welder in the area (Lansing, but close enough), once Michigan has ended it's stay-at-home on May 28th, I'll take it to him. . I can glue some steel together with a MIG, but I don't want to learn how to weld aluminum starting with a cylinder head.

To be clear, I'm very happy my governor is taking this seriously and doing what is needed. Friends and even family of mine have become extremely sick from this virus. And I'm even on the at risk list due to being a lucky one to get diagnosed with a rather common disease 15 years ago. I've also been to the hospital in the middle of all this and seen the chaos first hand. I can understand if you haven't been near to it you might think it's over blown or just another flu. We got hit hard here. We don't have millions dying, but we have thousands dead in a matter of months.
Let's get back to taking about cars.

Thread is awesome!!!
My two all-time favorite cars, 911 and Camaro. I have a pro-touring '70 SS/RS-LS and know first hand how badA$$ these engines are. 20k miles on my LS conversion. 420rwhp LS1 and 26.5 mpg at a sustained 80mph. Ive driven multiple Goodguys road tours across country in the car, and have spent time with Mark Stielow and Gordon Rowjoski and their builds. I love this idea of my two worlds coming together in someone's garage. I'd like to do this to a 944 at some point, but I can tell you, my 997.2 s car is a perfect scalpel of a driving machine and the Camaro is a well balanced knife. Has DSE rear tunable 4 link and Speedtech up front. Modded T-56 and tru-tracker 12 bolt with Baer stoppers under Forgelines. Love driving them both, can't pick a winner.
I'm subscribed for sure!
enjoy.....

Very interesting thread, so yea. Please no politic stuff please. Hate to move this one.
Saw you worked on LT stuff for GM past few years. Don't suppose you are the Rennlister that is a GM engineer that did the neat Neuimburg deal a couple of years ago?

A couple of years ago GM set a smoking hot lap at the Ring with the new LT Camero. The driver was a Rennlister that was a GM engineer, not a professional driver. He was very, very good however!
By the way, what you are doing is scrareligious, but you sure are doing it well! I can tell you are a first class machines with no fear of digging in. Rebuilding that 3.8 yourself might have been easier and cheaper than you imagine given your skill set.

I just so happen to have a 997 starter for sale if you need one...

Will you be able to keep the a/c in the swap? Renegade kits lose the a/c. Great thread!
