There are a lot of choices for scan tools, but forget Harbor Freight. I've had a Blue Driver (phone or tablet app) for years and it works well. In that category I've seen a lot of people mention Carly (I have no experience with it). Moving up in price there's manufacturer-specific scan tools like Schwaben and iCarsoft, both of which I've owned. I sold the Schwaben because I found the documentation just too hard for me to comprehend (unit is made in China). I still have the iCarsoft and it's much easier for me to use. If I had an extra $500 or so I'd go for one of the Autel Maxicom scan tools that moves you into professional technician level capabilities. I'm not there yet.

If you DIY at all you need at least a decent basic OBDII scan tool for $50 or less. If you want to be able to reset service lights or change codings you'll need to move up.

Very good value for about $150. This is Porsche specific, but coverage for additional makes can be added. Easy to use.
