Default My First Oil Analysis

So after all the discussion on bore scoring I went ahead and ordered a UOA from Blackstone after my yearly oil change (I also had concerns with small bits of black plastic on the oil filter folds).
Here are the results. Interesting that the only issue highlighted was 10 ppm Lead.
Any comments? And yes Mobil 1 0-40 oil.

Just in general, I would recommend changing your oil twice a year or every 3000 miles. You can push it to 5000 if you like. I’d also switch to 5W.

That's classic Mobil 0W40 shearing right there.

A bit more Pb and Fe than normal. Start using MoS2.

What you mean by MoS2? A fuel additive or a different oil brand like MOTUL Xcess?

I don’t have any better advice but I have been confused the entire time that I have owned my 2012C2S concerning Porsche engineers and oil. Some brag on the Porsche engineers at every turn. However many of us are at the same time convinced that the engineers have no clue when it comes to oil and oil change intervals. I wonder why.

Oil additive. 1.5 cans (450mL) of Liqui Moly MoS2 when oil is changed.

Please explain. I don't understand what you are seeing in the numbers. Thank you.

Oil is cheap, engines are not. I would change it more frequently and switch to a Motul or Driven 5W40. The Pb is slightly concerning although it could just be a streak that sometimes occurs from a particle running across a bearing surface. That or it is the oil not providing optimal protection from wear. As far as I know the bearings are the only source of Pb but I am sure Jake or someone will chime in and point out other possible sources.

As for the black bits, I would consider buying a Durametric and checking your cam deviation. Also you can use it to log and watch cam angle vs nominal to spot something out of wack (chain guides, tensioner, IMS, etc). It is just a good tool to have.

I believe what he's talking about is Viscosity readings near the bottom of the range when mileage for the oil is on the high side (for Porsche owners). The viscosity reading should be different at something below 3000 miles (or maybe lower according to others) and that is part of the animosity people have towards M1 0W-40.... you gotta change it more frequently because of permanent degradation of oil viscosity (i.e. shearing).

High Temperature Viscosity (aka Kinematic) of a 40 viscosity oil is 12.5<16.3 cSt (the term is centistokes) at 100 degrees C, as published by SAE J-300 classification. Your Mobil 1 oil has sheared out of 40 viscosity into 30 viscosity range. Think of it as the engine has beaten up the oil a bit, which caused the lead to elevate slightly. For a car driven 6-7K miles annually I recommend you change the oil twice a year.

Thanks for explaining that. Not my car, but points well taken.
