Default Fuel tank oil leak!

Hi there,

I just bought myself a 2010 997 C2S and my mechanic told me that there’s an oil leak from the fuel tank. Any of you came across similar problems before? How should I deal with it?

I’ve attached some photos for your reference.

Thanks!
Cheers

I suspect that is fuel and not oil and would have that fixed ASAP. Looks like fuel pooling in the recess where the return line and connector sit.

Strange that a "mechanic" would think a fuel tank is leaking oil. Might need a better shop.

I mean fuel. My bad I worded it wrongly. Will I need a new fuel tank? Thanks!

Engine is in the back so motor oil would not be in the front, but maybe power steering fluid? Most likely it’s gas from the hoses leaking though.

I suspect there is a crack in the fuel pump housing itself, possibly at the base of the fitting the return line connects to. I had this issue with a fuel pump on a VW which is similar. Your mechanic should be able to quickly diagnose the source I would think.

Did you check to see if the plastic screw down ring was tight? If it's tight and still leaking it could simply be the gasket in a best case scenario or the pump/tank in a worst case scenario.

Had something similar happen to one of my cars. The fuel sending/pump retaining ring was getting caught on a hose clamp and stopped turning. The previous owner/mechanic stopped turning the ring at that point. All that was needed is to move the hose clamp out of the way and continue turning the ring until tight. Should be a simple fix. But as others said, get it fixed immediately.

I have a bmw that started smelling of gas to the point that once I put it up on the lift I could see droplets of gasoline. Turned out to be one the plastic nipples/barbs was cracked. Once the car was turned on and the fuel pump started you could see gasoline spritzing all over the place. New pump and everything was resolved.

Seems like you should be able to figure out where it’s all coming from.

Have you found out from where fuel is coming? I have a similar issue on a 2006 Boxster. Mine seems to be from the tank itself, fuel pump area is dry.
