Seems like the issue usually occurs in CA. Upside down handle and fill ring is the solution. I've never had it happen in either of my 997s in the SE states in which I drive.
Yeah, that's why I was saying above it sounded like I have a somewhat different variant of the issue. The "classic" example appears to be the pump clicking off before full, usually around 3/4 tank, typically with vapor-reclamation-equipped pumps, especially the extra-fancy EVR Phase II pumps which appear to only or nearly only exist in CA. In my case the tank was very nearly empty (computer range showed 35 miles) and it was clicking off instantly, with very old-school pumps not equipped with any vapor capture.
So, having thought about it a bit more, I kind doubt the fill ring is likely to help me. Hard telling whether the upside down solution would. If I run into the problem again I'll give it a shot.
I have the same problem with all our vehicles, 2017 Audi, 2018 jeep wrangler and my 2007 997. But I always hold the nozzle all through the fueling operation. so when it stops, I immediately release the debit and continue on.
