Default Oil Pressure Fluctuation

Hello all,

Was driving my '05 Carrera, outside temp 83deg, coolant temp normal, oil temp slightly above 200, engine running great
with oil pressure at 5 bar which is normal for my car when rpm's above 2500..
Came to a stop and the oil pressure dropped only to 4 bar at idle, not 2.5 the usual mark.
This happened at every stop I had to make.
When I got home and was pulling into garage the pressure dropped to 2.5 at idle where is should be.
Any thoughts on what's going on, or similar experiences?
Appreciate your input!

My oil pressure is usually somewhere between pegged at 5 bar or 2.5-3 bar. It varies anywhere between there, only noting that it is at 5 bar when in motion. I haven’t noticed any real trends.

The sensor may be failing. With the key turned to the position before it starts, the pressure should read 0. If it reads anything else the sensor is failing.
I'm on my third one if it means anything.

Agreed. Probably the sensor - it was for me.

HB-
How big a job is it to replace the sensor, I looked at the engine diagram and it looks to be above cylinders 4-6 IIRC.
Thanks

Now the oil pressure gauge sometimes stays at 5 bar at idle.
Opinions - gauge faulty or pressure sensor bad?
Thanks!

I just replaced my sensor. Indy offered to do it for 2hr labor. It took me 10mins from above with a crows foot wrench (17mm).

Iiyama,
what engine do you have? Mine is an 05 M96 3.6 engine. I have the 997.1 shop manual which says, from underneath remove the two torx screws and heat shield
then use 3/8 wobble extension with 19mm crows foot to R&R the sensor.
I can see the sensor from above and reach it with my hand but I don't think I could get a wrench in there.
If you have the same engine can you tell me how you did it in more detail?
Thanks

I apologize, it was 19mm (actually a 3/4”). I have 06 911S, so 3.8L. I was able to reach in between coolant line and ac hoses. Attached are some pics. Wide view from deck lid, close up between hoses, and finally my crows foot and 6in extension. I was able to put the crows foot on the unit, then attached the ratchet and had plenty of room to break it free. From there I hand removed it. Reversed for install. I hope that helps, sorry for the 3/4” conversion error!

Iiyama- many thanks for the pics and procedure! I have the tools so I will give it a try, if it
doesn't work from the top I'll jack up the car and do it the hard way!
