"...Seeing how it is mostly a facelifted 996 with 25 more horsepower, how bad could it be?.."

True, it wont be bad. But I have not had the uncontrollable urge to by a $70K+ standard 996 either. There are just so many better choices these days (and that is coming from a BIG TIME Porsche fan).

While this may not be the place to admit it, I have never been a big Porsche fan. As a teenager and young adult, I preferred the lower price, higher performance and styling of Corvettes.

However, now that I have matured and years of German cars have spoiled me, I can't think of any car I would rather own than a 996 C4S. It has to be the best car I have ever driven. Bang-for-the-buck still goes to the Chevy but owning a car like this is so much more than road test 0-60 times. For those on a limited budget, driving excitement starts with the Subaru WRX and works its way up with many other excellent cars to choose from.

Assuming money was not an object, which cars do you think are better choices than a 996?

Alan,

I truly don't think there is a better choice for a great sportscar than a 911. For me Porsche is THE one. I have owned several turbo versions, and many naturally asperated, all of them were great-great cars. However, with that said...

The new Mercedes-Benz coupes are excellent. $52K gets you a hard to beat package in the CLK500. The new Corvette is also a great choice. I personally would like back seats, but at $45K I could forgo that. The 350Z is a good choice, as is the RX8... Just not for me. The bigger HP Audi TT... The Cadillac XLR... The new Lotus Elise... Heck the Infiniti G35 sport coupe. Top of the food chain still has to be the Ferrari Maranello though (for me a used one!). We live in the best "car era" ever. Any of those above are great choices.

I badly want a new Porsche, it just has to be darn good for me to buy one.

Put deposit down on Saturday with New Country in Greenwich. I'm #7 in line for a normally aspirated car. Apparently the dealer has 15 deposits for the pending twin-turbo.

So what is going to come after 999 when Porsche runs out of numbers?
