Just mounted the wheels . Unfortunately the color only looks good under fluorescent lighting. But in the real world they just look BLACK even in direct sun light.:soapbox: Theyre great if you like black holes. But I dont and Ab hoe lute lee hate them.So back to the drawing board. Ill try to lighten them up a bit with a mist coat of pearlizer or metalizer before throwing in the towel and have them painted or PC.which is what was going to happen in the end anyway. Oh well just another wasted Saturday.

Thats whats great about plasti dip. No harm done

Here are a couple pictures I took before walking away disgusted.

Its hard to believe that a wheel can look like this in my garage on a trash barrel but like this on the car ....

Bringing this back one more time.. Two 5 second mist coats of pearlizer took care of the problem and lightened up the dark Anthracite just a touch.Still dark but not too be confused with silver or black. They really pick up the setting sun nicely now.
Thanks for everyones interest. Now this thread can finally die a peaceful death.

Weird. Looks like you dipped them in black after the initial anthracite dip, at least in some of the pics..

Petza914 05-23-2019 09:43 AM

Yea, it's crazy how dark those looked once mounted. They're still pretty dark I bet, unless in direct sunlight like in those last pics. When you go the PC route, based on what we learned here, maybe pick one shade lighter than you think you want since they seem to look darker once mounted and then you'll get the look you're going for.

Make sure the powdercoater knows to use a low temp curing powdercoat and doesn't get the wheel too hot during the curing process as that can damage the structure of the aluminum. I think it has to stay under 400 degrees but do some research on that number.

Yah guys I got hood winked by the fluorescent lighting thinking the sun would bring out the same effect. Heres the latest result. I added another 2 full coats of pearl. This is about as good as i can get it without doing something completely different. Which I probably will anyway.

Full sun and shade....

That looks very nice now.

sandwedge 05-24-2019 02:41 AM

I like it too. Not full silver but a shade of gray in there to tone it down a bit. Keeper imo.

Thanks again guys! Will call it "late afternoon silver". Its a proprietary mix.

love the changed look

Steph1 05-26-2019 04:44 PM

I really like the looks now. Maybe you found the dark too dark, but they still looked much better than when silver.

Super job bringing it back to your liking. You are better than me, cause it seems that when I find myself in a similar situation, 3 times outta 5, I seem to make things worst rather than better.

This thread isnt dead apparently and Im not done yet either. After adding the pearlizer over the Anthracite it did lighten up a couple shades but after a couple days being honest with myself I had to say yep now they have a hint of BLUE. Luckily I had only done the driver side so I could have a couple days of scrutiny before doing the passenger side. Soooo heres the latest..AGAIN. I really love this color and its what i wanted all along. A deep, silver-gray steel or gun metal look. Not silver, not anthracite or black. No underlying funky blue or purplish hues. If the process I used to achieve this holds up.... great. if not the powder coater can blast it off in seconds. I did an experiment 1st and the dip will still peel off. 2 coats of Duplicolor graphite wheel paint sprayed directly over the Plasti dip. Its cloudy today , no sunshine so I wheeled this out and snapped a couple shots. Will post some new pictures after i complete the other 3 and mount them back up.

That looks really nice, at least to me it does. Subjective but if I were you I would try to leave that edition alone if you can without further experiments :)
