GT3 today or 997 tomorrow?

I doubt there will be a [2005] 997 GT3.
But I have no doubt that there will be one. It might not have the GT3 name, but every modern model of Porsche 911 have been available at some time in a racing version. It wouldn't suprise me if there will be a 997 GT3 available for order late 2005 for deliveries in 2006. Even though the 996 GT3-RS is a great car, it's still a "Last Hurray" for the 996 and the end of it's era.
However I have no idea what the new clubsport racer will be named. It might be 997 RS, 997 CS, 997 GT3 etc etc.. But I have no doubt there will be one.
So if you're comparing the 996-GT3 with a 997, you sure will be disappointed with the 997, since it's not a track-horse.
I'd wait for the 997, in a racing form such as the GT3/CS/RS or whatever name it will get.
My 2 cents...

Of course the problem with waiting for a possible 997 based US GT3 is that, by the time it is available, you will wonder if you should wait for the "999" (or whatever the next rev is) based GT3 equivalent.

I was fortunate enough to drive a GT3 recently. I vote for the GT3. If you find you like the 997 when it comes out, you can sell the GT3 to me. I can't afford one now but I'm saving for a 'previously owned' one....

Sean, this is a tricky question.
I was dealing with the same question : GT3 now or 997 next year ....
My choice was GT3 now, b/c for me the GT3 is state of the art sport car, not a luxury car, not a gadget car. The GT3 is real ... everybody knows it. It's fantastic to drive. I'm not sure a base 911 or 997 would do this. If you need sportivity in your daily driving, just jump on the GT3. My dealer told me that there is maybe a GT3 for the next generation, but not within 3 years. So ... what's up ... the GT3 is and will stay the best car for me. Plus, I am not convinced about the 997 design ... way to soft, and looking like the 993 ... The GT3 is a dream car, and I am the most happy guy for have this dream achieved. Well, current may, when the car arrives ....

Jecey, I think you've made a good choice.
The GT3 represents the ultimate development of the 996 platform. Porsche has had 5 years to work out the "bugs," and they've produced one of the most desirable models in years.
In the short term, the 997 may steal a little of the GT3's thunder (especially if there is a 997 GT3). But the 996 GT3 is going to remain a sought after model for a long time to come.

The 996 GT3 is such an amazing car that I'd get it and use it until the new 997 is well tested and we really see what it can deliver. I've never seen such a car as the GT3... AWESOME! If you got a chance to drive it, you're done.
