Default 997.1 Key Remote/Replacement

My 06 C2S needs a new key head. The old one is cracked and held together with a piece of tape. It still works fine, but it looks like $h*t.

I called the dealer and was quoted $371.00+ tax. Yikes. The Porsche tax is crazy. I see the key heads online for $20.00...

I was on Amazon and saw a few options, all relatively close in price. Does anyone have a recommendation for one in particular? Looks like some have bad reviews, and those remotes look almost identical to the ones with good reviews.

Any recommendations are appreciated.

Get a new head from fleabay that comes without electronics or blade, then xfer them from your existing fob. No need for dealer participation then.

And how will you marry the head to the alarm system inside the 997? You have to take it to the dealer and pay $250 for programming. Might as well buy from them … although they are not stupid-proof

If you use the innards from your original key and transplant into new key body, no programming required.

That price is not that outrageous. My son needed a new key for his 2011 Ford Fusion. The key was about $125 and the programming was about $125 ( Ford dealer). He only had one key but we were told that if he had two keys, he could get one of those generic keys online and go through a procedure using the two old keys to program the new one. You still need to get the new key cut.

My local dealer quoted me $450+tax for one new complete key for my 997.1 (needs to be ordered in person at the parts dept with proof of ownership) then 2-3 days later, service can match the keys for an additional $174.99+tax.

In the event you need a new fob, not the blade, then order it direct from Suncoast. You'll receive an OEM fob/transmitter that can be coded by the dealer. If you need a new blade, do not order any ol' blade blank on the web except an OEM blade. The dealer will have to cut it for you, and the dealer will not cut any blade that is not OEM. The non-OEM blade is fabricated from a material that breaks the dealer key cutting machine. just my two bits.

I did something similar -- ordered a new OEM key fob (well, the 997.2 black version) from Beverly Hills Porsche (via the bay) for $162. Then, bought a key blade blank for $10 (non-OEM from Maxspeed Motorsports). Took the blank to a local VW dealer and they charged $5 to cut the key after I provided proof of ownership. Put the cut key blank in the fob and took to a local Indy with PIWIS. They coded the key for $30. So, about $200 total for a a brand new key. I did this for a backup as my car only came with 1 key. For that, I simply bought a replacement 997.2 housing from the bay (generic) for $15 I think and transferred the innards and key blade myself.
