The date of manufacture is the last four digits of the DOT code. The first two digits are the week of manufacture, and the last two digits are the year. For example, if the last four digits of the DOT code are 0203, that means that the tire was manufactured during the second week of the year 2003.

"Safety advocates say if tires are over six years old, they should be replaced." ... Yes, Bridgestone and Michelin say that after five years tires should be inspected, but all three companies recommend replacing your tires 10 years after the date of manufacture, not six.

FYI

Do I have to replace this ASAP?
Those aren't cracks, definitely tears. Are the tears on all 4 tires? Sometimes a shop will rub against the hoist legs when they bring a car in, that would cause this as well.

You can try to apply some type of rubber glue as the only thing that looks damaged is the "curb protector edge" on the tire.

Years ago I had a similar tear/rip on a tire. Big mystery until a year or so later at a party and after a few glasses of wine, my wife confessed to banging into a large road deflector thing. Mystery solved... I've since found one of those large "city tittties" and have it in our garage as a funny reminder. ( Well, I think it's funny.)

if the only tears are on the rim protector, then it has worked. No need to replace the tires for that.
I agree that cold temps will cause chunks to come out while driving summer tires in too cold conditions.

I would contact Michelin directly. That should not happen. Tires come apart from defects during manufacturing... it does happen. Send them the pictures.

Called it cosmetic but didn’t offer an explication.
