Give these guys a call:EURO MOTORS SERVICE CENTER202-526-3800http://euromotorsdc.com/service_center/
They installed a top on a 997 for one of my friends (he lives in Bel Air) that he purchased from TopsOnline.com and it turned out great. That was about 3 years ago. Garage door remote malfunctioned and came down while he was backing out and put a 12" rip in his top.

Replaced my top(2005 Carrera Cab) last summer; used a Gahh top(~$1100) not including install. Install varies all over the map; I paid $750 in Naples, Fl. Gahh is a premier provider of replacement tops; they use OEM materials known as 'German A5'. Would not think this would be a DIY project. Most of these tops from wherever require the use of the original rear window. The top comes without rear window and the new top needs to be cut and fashioned to accept the original window. The top also requires some stitching using an industrial sewing machine. A Gahh top to an installer is something like $600 and the installer will usually mark it up(suggested retail is $1049). My installer told me he only marks it up $150 and makes his money on the install. BE AWARE; when you drive a Porsche; they see $$ signs. It pays to shop around!! I was not aware of my installer until after I had acquired the top; should have followed my own advice and would have saved a chunk! Bye the way, the Gahh website will provide a list of installers via zip code.

Gahh is what you say when you see the bill.
Unfortunately, installing a soft top is not a DIY job unless you're doing a Bugeye Sprite or a Cobra. Getting everything lined up and looking taut and wrinkle-free is truly an art. It's one of the things I refuse to even attempt in my home shop.
And don't forget that just the top is expensive. If you screw it up, that's an expensive mistake.
In fact, I would be hesitant to even trust this to the dealer. Chances are they will farm the work out to an upholstery shop anyway. Better to find a shop with good references yourself and eliminate the middle man.

I had my 2000 Boxster S' (Still my all time favorite car) top replaced at Bay Country Top, and they did a nice job.
