Shocks

Shocks
I just returned from my local Porsche dealership, who was sponsoring an event with complimentary inspections. I knew the car, a 2011S cab non-chrono, would need a major service next month ($1800), but I was not expecting the need for rear shocks and then a four wheel alignment at $3600. That's a major "ouch". They said the rears were leaking. Is this normal for a 48K mile 997? The dealership implied that it was not, and suggested that they would contact Porsche to see if they would "help" with the cost. Of that I am skeptical.
I had the rear tires replaced and a four wheel alignment earlier this year by an indy.
Has anyone experienced shock failure at this mileage or less and how do you feel about the service charges?
BTW. Earlier this year I "curbed" the lower area on the corner of the front bumper. While having the bumper repainted and the plastic spoiler replaced, I had them install clear bra on the bumper, 1/3 hood and mirrors. Total cost was $1,500. Just for information.

Had one of my front shocks replaced by my dealer, $600 in parts and a couple hours of labour.
$3600 is too much. Swapping a rear shock is easy; half an hour if you know what you're doing and have tools. Labour should be 2-4 hours, plus 1 for the alignment.

Buy shocks and have independent install them. $750 with alignment here in Dallas. My entire new suspension cost $1500. Installed myself for free.

Wow, 48k and leaking. I have 110k on my ‘06 c2s and no leaks. Maybe it’s the different shocks. I would suggest getting a second opinion.

Whether or not $3,600 is what a dealer would charge for rear shocks and an alignment, I can't say. The Porsche tax is strong with some dealers. What I can say is that that price is exorbitant for the work done. If you're not able to do the work yourself (understandable, not judging), then any competent independent shop should be able to do the work for you for much less.
If the shocks are worn out, I might consider replacing the fronts while you're doing this. It will save you from having to do another alignment when the fronts do go out.
