Years ago I worked at Marathon and spent a lot of time at the refineries as an env'l attorney. The head chemist is a close friend and client.
At the wholesale level gasoline is fungible and refiners trade with each other. You can't be sure who made it. It is at the bulk plant where the trucks pick up that the additives are added and the fuel receives its branded uniqueness. Marathon also owns Speedway and it was very careful to make Marathon gas and Speedway gas different. At that time I was told that if the car is fuel injected and you expect to own it for 40K miles it was worth paying extra for the Marathon gas as it had a better cleaning additive. Don't know if that is still true. That said, I usually put 93 in from the best station I can find around here, usually Marathon. I agree with all the comments about avoiding water and sediment, too.

I was told by the BMW dealer (when the direct injection engines first came out and had lots of fouling problems) to only use the "top tier" gas. The other stations like the local Giant Eagle buy from a wholesaler so you never get the same gas twice. Sometimes it's good. Sometimes it is not.
