New York to Nova Scotia/Cape Breton...but...
I'm traveling to Nova Scotia/Cape Breton from New York in August. Starting as a golf trip and then picking up my wife in Halifax a few days later and a visit to friends. I have a blue 6-speed Subaru Forrester and my several months old, flawless, fast, really beautiful, fun, 2008 Silver and Cocoa, 6-speed, 911 997.1 4S cabriolet with 50K miles. Obviously I want to take the little car which is simply remarkable. It runs beautifully and I'm not paranoid about miles depreciating the value. I am concerned about the possibility that things can, and sometimes do, go wrong and what would be my options on the road? I've had the car thoroughly maintained and it really is in good condition. I wouldn't hesitate with a 2008 BMW. I'm not a worrier, but trying to think clearly. So the question is: Am I really just a baby or is discretion the better part of valor? What to do? I'm 71 today and not sure how to evaluate all the pieces? This forum is great. Come on people, I'm depending on you...

Took a 3,800 mile trip at the end of May in the C4s and really loved it. I'm 65 and the wife is 63. Took a plug-kit, enough tools for simple repairs and my Durametric. No issues at all and that will be the first of many roadtrips my wife and i will take in that car. Take a radar detector!

Take the trip. Life is short. Two years ago my wife and I took a round trip drive to Quebec City from Connecticut in our 2008 C4 cab when we were both 71. It was fantastic in the C4. Since you are probably replacing the water pump, I suggest you replace the serpentine belt and all the rollers at the same time. Any of those could go at anytime in a 2008 with 50k. Have a blast ...we did!

Don’t take a radar detector to Canada. Pretty sure they are still illegal there. My friends father was in Ontario from Detroit and was pulled over. He asked for the radar then crushed it under his boot. Gave it back to him in pieces and let him know they were illegal in his country. It was a nice Passport too.

Ok about the radar detector. I have heard this before...
Happen to have the Uniden R3 also but will simply stow it away...
I've got new tires, a plug kit and a compressor, a compact battery charger...
Thanks too about the Durametric but pretty sure it's above my pay grade...
I'll talk to my mechanic tomorrow about the water pump et al...
Some good length trips here, encouraging...nice replies all.
It's beginning to look like you've all made the decision for me...
Thank you.

Enjoy the ride... these cars are one of the most reliable cars I've ever owned (as long as maintained right)! Now, whether or not the bumpier ride, louder interior, getting in and out on a long trip is a problem for you is another story. I tend to NOT take the 997 on boring long highway driving with tons of traffic, 997 would be a pain, but it looks like the road you're taking is quite fun.

Oh yea I forgot the original question. Yes take it. I drove my 997.2 from Southern California to East Texas in 2 days, 1695 miles. Believe it or not it was so comfortable that I could have easily done another day or two. Enjoy the ride. Oh and I do not have the manual seats. I think they are 12 or 14 way seats. Not sure off hand. They are comfortable though.

I just took my 911 from Daytona Beach to Scottsdale
I made in two days - total miles driven was 2192
I was so impressed with how it performed and how comfortable it was driving over such a long distance - which was a 1st for me
such a joy and I hit 50k while driving through Texas

The seats really are terrific, yes, all way adjustable. Longish drives have been great...(I did buy it in Detroit and drove back through Canada in October. But I didn't know better did I? Ignorance is bliss.) The roads in Cape Breton should be beautiful; the Cabot Trail is supposed to be great. (As are Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs golf.) Getting the car checked Thursday. I'll let you all know what we find. And seriously if everything checks out, it's a done deal.
