I ran the Porsche recommended sizes for winter wheels and tires on my 997 turbo. It performed beautifully during the winter months in the Colorado mountains.

IMO, don;t over think this. Just get Porsche rims. Your manual or PCNA (call 800 number) will help you with the correct wheel dimensions, models, and part numbers. If you are NOT going to use the Porsche recommendations, make sure you get the correct offset as that is all about stress on the bearings. I always care about diameter as that can have an effect on the stability management computer (or so some say).
I always buy winter rims for my and my wife's cars from sports car tire shops. They always have "take offs" - used rims folks dump to put on the latest neon spinners. I would not use the Porsche forums... folks whe are newbies think their wheels are worth some stupid high prices. They are not.
I've driven a Porsche as my every day, only car since 2000 and have always swapped winter wheels for 18 years. We do get snow here in Philly while snow tires vary in what they can do (some I hate, some I love) they are a million times better than all seasons or summer tires.
Peace

Get the 19 stock sizes. And the rec snow tires. If you want it to drive like a Porsche.
You can mix and match sizes and get some Blizzaks to fit on 18's if you really want. But the car drives like crap.
And I have not noticed a huge difference between "performance" snow tires and non performance snow tires in snow. But there is a huge difference between the two in the snow.
