Default Proper way to check oil level

Am new to the 997 scene, 2006 911C2. Can anyone describe the best way to check the oil level. Check with engine hot, running, cold. I know on level ground but what is best? Ignition on but engine not running? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I usually check when cold and flat level ground.
It shows the level just before I start the engine.

Level ground. 997.1 manual says to check cold. As in, having not been driven for many hours, such as overnight. I find if I check it after the car has been sitting 3-4 hours it still reads high. With all the high-tech aftermarket stuff they've invented for these cars, it surprises me nobody has come up with an aftermarket dipstick conversion.

Interestingly, 997.2 won't let you check cold. Must be warm.

Did the owners manual come with the car?

Karl.
