Unhappy 997 low oil pressure

Morning start up was great up till earlier this year, now after being on the road for about 20 minutes on the way to work, with morning temps at 65 degrees, at the bottom of my offramp my oil temp is at 180degrees, and the oil pressure at idle is .5 bar.
During the ride the pressure almost reflects the RPM, ( 3.5K rpm= 3.5 bar) which looks normal, but, now I'm starting to hear a very faint ticking on the driver side of the engine, and gets louder, it gets really hot as on my way home, it's 95 degrees outside, oil temp warms up quickly and I'm in slight stop and go traffic, every time I release the throttle and I'm near the left center divider wall I could clearly hear the ticking a bit louder, it gets a tad quieter as I accelerate, and oil temp almost reaches the 225 mark, oil was changed about 400 miles ago, coolant is also fresh (3 months), it also has a 160degree thermostat , ticking sound is coming from the cam side of the of the head, used a stethoscope to spot it, possible colapst lifter maybe cause of the oil situation.
Boy do I need ideas , I forgot to mention that the hi pressure piston and spring ( below the main oil pump) were changed out
Any ideas a greatly excepted

I would ping Jake Raby at Flat6 for his recommendations. I dont think you can PM him anymore on RL but if you go to the Flat6 Innovations Facebook page you can message him there.

I have a 2006 S with 103K on the clock.

Please don't panic or call Jake for God sake.

Your oil temp is completely normal, especially at that outside temp. I run 225 quite frequently in hot weather and I have a third radiator.

Engine ticks are not anything to worry about either.

I had what I considered to be low oil pressure and then it turned into a low oil pressure light (talk about concerned!) I took it to the shop and it was the oil pressure sensor. All better.

Be calm and get it checked. I bet it is nothing serious.

as I understand it oil pressure should be roughly 1.2 x RPM so .5 definitely sounds low, particularly at that temp. that being said you would get a CEL if it was too low. could be the sensor. as a quick test turn your key but dont start the car. if the gauge reads anything but 0 its a bad sensor.

do bring it in to your indy to get checked out and find out what oil they put it in during the last change.

Keep in mind that the pressure gauge is BAR not PSI so .5 Bar is about 7psi. That seems a tad low. but maybe with that many miles, it's time to thicken the grade of oil in the summer months.

a basic OBDII reader will tell you if you have a bad sensor

Heres what happened on my way home from work at about 3:45 ish in 98 degree heat fighting stolen go traffic, oil temp reached 240 degrees on dash gauge and pressure fell down to the left side of the red hash Mark, if I wasn't nervous already, I needed to stop at the store right before getting home, so when I restarted the car I was literlly stairing at the oil pressure needle, after car started needle didn' quite wann move till I gave the throttle a tap, I was afraid to do that cause I assumed there was no oil but the bump brought it back to the .5 bar, I was in the store for 10 minutes after getting off the hot fwy

I'm going to let the car rest these next few days, and going to connect a mechanical gauge so I could really tell my actual oil pressures are,

If you turn the key almost to start and the gauge moves, it's failing. It should stay at Bar 0 until you start it. The OBD2 port doesn't convey oil pressure data.
I have 92k on my car and blend 5/40 & 10/60 and this gives me a 1.5 bar at 200 degrees and just over 1 bar at 225 degrees @ idle.

Good info. Have you found the car to run hotter with more miles on it? I had 5w40 motul in mine and told him I was concerned when I saw idle oil pressure at .9 at 240 degrees after ripping up the mountains the other day. thats the hottest it’s been. He said they run hotter as they get older and recommended non-synthetic swepco 15w40 or 15w50, which every mechanic there swears by. They had me start at 40 weight and then said they would bump me up to 50 if I didn’t see a decrease in temp, and increase in pressure. So far I’ve only seen a minor decrease in temp so was planning to bump to 50 weight. However I hear slightly more noise from the lifters at cold start because of the 15w, which I don’t like. So your blend sounds like an good approach.

I have a third radiator on mine and the car doesn’t run hit at all except in stop and go traffic. On a warm day with high revs on a canyon road I see maybe 225. As long as air is moving over that radiators it keeps the oil temps in check. On track, I tend to ease up at 225 which is usually about a lap before the cool down lap anyways. In traffic it can reach about 240 ish. But what can one expect going 20 miles in an hour and a half.

I am about to install the center radiator in mine, I was thinking about adding a pair of small electric fans switched by a temp sensor to add air flow during times a slow/no speed.

The few times I have tracked mine I noticed that I was able to increase the normal temps quite a bit and I noticed the oil pressure drop with the increased temps, once cooled to normal operations the oil pressure returns to normal but I do start to "worry" until the temps and pressure settle back to normal.

I feel with you and wish you the best of luck with resolving the issue, I only with I had more experience with it to share.
