Hanksville Hotrod Exhaust
I have been reading and researching different exhaust options for my 2007 997.1 I had a 993 for a number of years and the exhaust that I really liked was the RSR made by Robin Sun. He charged about $450 to plasma cut the mufflers open and remove some of the baffles and steel wool. Once he TIG welded them back together, they looked stock. Yes Porsche uses stainless steel wool inside the 993 mufflers. The sound was perfect for my ear. Louder than stock but not loud.
I decided on my 997 to go with the Hanksville Hotrod 997 bypass kit. It runs $245. Once I received the kit I found out that our exhaust pipes are made of stainless steel. The kit is also made of stainless. I have read posts on here about taking your mufflers to a muffler shop and having them install a by-pass between the two pipes. This bypasses most of the muffler and I'm concerned about the welds (muffler shop quality) holding up. Hanksville's kit only bypasses about half the muffler like the Porsche Sport Exhaust.
I decided to take my parts to a local stainless steel welding specialist. He does a lot of work for silicon valley (work stations) and I really wanted a quality job. He charged me $200 to weld them up. He's also a car guy and has some super trick cars in the shop. If anyone is interested his name is Sal and his company is Specialty Fabrication in Pleasanton California. Hank is also top notch. Each piece is mandrel bent and fit perfectly making the welding easy (easy for Sal!)
I'll let you know how it sounds once I install the mufflers. I'm hoping for a rumble that's not too loud. In stock form it sounded like a passenger car.

Nice looking work.
I'd be interested in hearing the forum's experience on difference between this and the Fister/Gundo.
It looks like this increases the exhaust outlet where as the Fister/Gundo short cuts the inlet/outlet partially bypassing the muffler.

I have mine done this way, its not loud, most people would think it's stock still. I had the gundo hack done on another set and thought it was too raspy sounding for my taste.

The sound is just what I was looking for. I can start-up and drive around my neighborhood with no racket. Under full throttle acceleration, the exhaust note wails just right. It sounds the way Porsche flat 6's sounded before all of the noise restrictions.

Old thread reboot, but do you have any sound clips?
