Buying advise needed
Hey guys – current 996 owner looking of an upgrade. Daily driver! My budget is around 60K.I came across a couple of 997.2 and ’12 991s in these budget ranges. However, the car what really appears to me is the 911 Targa in general -from oldest to newest models.
Now, I found a car online on CARMAX.
https://www.carmax.com/car/15015974
Questions I have to get more insights and advise:
Thanks in advance for all your input!
Best regards,
Andreas

Questions I have to get more insights and advise:
- Do you guys have experience to buy a Porsche from Carmax?
- The good – bad and the ugly?
- Buying via internet from different location
- Do people use their “extended warranty” works?
- Found this 2008 Porsche 911 Targa 4S
- Is this a good deal ?
- Any insights on the VIN options and occurrences
- Should I look for other models - value for money?
Thanks in advance for all your input!
Best regards,
Andreas

Lots of us in here bought from Carmax with no issues and used the warranty with no questions asked. But do a good inspection on your own. They will not permit a ppi. But once you buy get the ppi and if things are found they will fix it or you get your money back, you get a week or so to do that. However they do not refund the transfer fee.

Looks like a nice vehicle, carmax does play games, despite the flat price they offer, on the first visit to look at a Porsche the guy was on the phone the whole time saying, my manager is saying a lot of people are interested in this car, and asking how I would be paying the entire ride, he was excited to sell the car. The second trip when I bought the car literally took all day, it was like beyond there closing hours when I drove out in the complete dark in an unfamiliar place.
They had weird hoops you have to jump through to get the finances done as well, the manager wanted to see that I had money in my bank, even though I was putting down a 5 digit down payment, just a FYI.
Also had a carmax salesman say he could not help me because I had left and come back?

Buying from Carmax can be a good decision, but I would only buy with the warranty.
Seems to be a good deal, considering mileage and the fact that it is a Targa. They typically price their cars pretty fairly.
If you want value for money, stick with a Carrera S. Targas are rare and command a premium. Also, if you want a car that will have better resale down the line, maybe look into a 6Speed or a PDK which would be in the 997.2 (2009 and newer) models. Nothing wrong with the Tip and I have driven quite a few miles in a Tip car, but people tend to prefer manual or PDK over tip.

No experience with CarMax so I let others comment.
The car however looks quite nice, it has the best wheels, Targa is very rare so this is a good find, I like the exterior/interior combo (but that's personal), and it looks clean from the pics. In terms of options, it's middle of the range, it has the best wheels, Nav, Bose, heated seats, and other usual options. What's missing is Sport mode (the wart clock in the middle), but you have Sport suspension (PASM), so that's not a biggie, and it's a Tip, which many don't like, but was the only Auto option in 2008 and it's a great option if you drive in traffic.
So, overall, not a smoking deal, nor a bad one. You must see it in person to look at the condition of the car close-by to know for sure.

That’s a Targa 4S which is really rare, even more so in white. Note I bought mine from Florida and had it shipped to Md. I reserved it soon as it came online. This Targa will not last long even if it’s a tip. Better act on it if you want it.

@911schalker: If you're interested, @DC911S is right. You should probably move quickly.
You should also start scheduling an inspection ASAP so that you can get all repairs covered within that 1 week grace period.

thanks guys for all the valuable feedback.
how much is the CarMax extended warranty for this kind of car?
Are people using alternative providers...what's the cost or service level difference!
Again - I really appreciate all the quick feedbacks and responses!

Agreed it looks fairly priced. Premium for it being a white+4S+Targa. If those weren't hard requirements I'd put my budget toward a 997.2. All depends on what you care about the most.

If you want an automatic, you really need a 997.2. PDK is the way to go. This one is PTS and it's priced very well...

Not sure of the warranty cost. But if you raise the deductible it gets cheaper. I did the 500 deduction and bought three years or up to 75k miles. It has 24k miles when I got it. Carmax are not the ones who underwrite the policy. They only sell them. My cost was 2100 or so. You might want to reserve it
