Default System Fault

Dropped my car off for a detail. Picked it up a couple of days later. While driving it home this System Fault code appeared.

I’m planning on taking it in, but figured it might be something that’s simple/easy to clear.

Any suggestions?

This could be the front end module that controls the airbag and a few other things. They can get damaged through ESD which happens when a buffer is used. It creates a static charge on the bumper skin and then discharged through the module thereby damaging the unit.

How do you avoid this when detailing?

Not using a buffer helps as it reduces the static buildup. I only hand wax the bumpers as they are plastic.

This happened to mine merely from my wife rubbing against the car with yoga pants trying to get a bike down. Its a static buildup in the front control module. It caused my frunk release switch to run constantly and gave me a visit workshop warning. I brought it to my indy and they were able to fix it by just resetting the ecu, which I believe you can also do by disconnecting the battery.

If that doesn't fix it then your control module is totally fried and needs to be replaced. A new one costs around $250 I think. I suspect yours probably will clear just by pulling the battery.

The recommendation I got was to disconnect the battery or remove the headlights if you were going to use a buffer on the bumper and/or headlights.

Thanks for the responses. I’ll try to disconnect the battery and restart the car.

Be warned that disconnecting the battery can cause an airbag light (not always, but often). If it happens a normal OBD-II code reader cannot clear the error code. You need a Durametric cable or a dealer trip. Likewise not all indy's have the capability to clear it either so call them first to confirm.
